Re: moms of outsiders- sleep questions

  • 1 week old

She was sleeping a ton, until last night. Things seem to have changed a bit! And they will again I am sure. Until then, she was sleeping in her papasan chair in the daytime, doing great. Bassinet at night, doing great.

Seems she now wants to not sleep on her own. I reallllly don't want to start this with her, as DD1 would only nap on us for about 6 months, and nights were atrocious as well. It was the source of a lot of anxiety for me.

    How are things for you?

She has her good and bad days/nights, but overall pretty well. Naps a ton during the day, is wide awake for most of the later evening, then once we go to bed around 11pm or midnight, she'll sleep for 5-6 hour stretches, wake up to feed, then sleep for another 3ish hours. I know we're spoiled, which makes her "off" nights seem worse than they are.

     Where?

Daytime- in the boppy, papasan chair, swing, on me

Nightime- on me, cradled in my arm in our bed, in the snugglenest, bassinet

Right now, we just go with wherever she'll sleep the longest :)

Oh I hope my little girl is this considerate!  That sounds amazing.

    How old is LO?

    How is LO sleeping?

What are your issues right now?

Days are fine... she's breastfeeding every 2 hours during the day, and does 4-6hour stretches at night. I guess that's one unexpected perk of co-sleeping...

My LO is 9 days old. :)

She sleeps good, but you have to swaddle and pat her to sleep. Sometimes, if she's gassy and I've already been breastfeeding her for 2 hours straight, I have to give her a pacifier to get her to sleep, but it works. If she's not swaddled and patted, she won't sleep, and the longer you wait to get her to sleep the harder your job will be!

During the day, when she's fully asleep, I put her in the swing or on the couch half on her side. She's not rolling yet and I don't leave her when she's on the couch so it's fine. At night, she'll only sleep with us. Once she's used to not being held when it's time to sleep, we'll start trying to get her to sleep in her cradle or swing at night.

Issues is figuring out a breastfeeding friendly diet! I know now what foods seem to give her gas, and omitting them makes us both happier people. I'm eating a ham and avocado sammy on white bread right now because wheat bread gives her gas, as does cheese and mayo and tomatoes. Most green veggies do, and all dairy. I've had to switch to rice milk because soy of any sort give her gas too. It's hard to modify my diet and watch my DH, DS and other DD eat kraft shells'n'cheese with broccoli while I eat a plain salted potato, but I have to remember if I eat that stuff the baby will pay for it later.

  • DS is 2 weeks old

He sleeps really well.  He sleeps 2-4 hour stretches and is starting to have 2 good stretches of awake time.  Usually one in the early afternoon and one late night (10-11pm); each lasting anywhere from 45min -1.5hours.

He sleeps in the PnP bassinet

My main issue right now is DD.  Her sleep schedule has been all over the place.  Some days are fine, others are terrible.  Short nap, or wont go down for her nap, wakes earlier than usual in the morning.  Its hit or miss with her; hopefully she will adjust and get back on her schedule soon.

  • Gus is 11 days old.

He sleeps a lot during the day and has been doing 2-2.5 hour stretches at night.

He sleeps with me now, usually cradled in my arms on the boppy while I sleep upright on our sectional couch.  I would love to sleep in my own bed again soon, but for now, this arrangement gets us all the most sleep we can!

Same as pp, my biggest issues right now are with DS1, he has not taken a nap in 3 days, when he was napping, it took forever to get him down then forever to get him to go to bed at night.  I'm hoping this is just an adjustment phase for him and he'll sleep better soon.  I am not ready for my 2 year-old to be done napping!

How is LO sleeping? WONDERFUL! *knocks on wood* ..sometimes 5 hours at a time! *knocks on wood again*

Where is LO sleeping? Bassinet next to our bed. I am going to start putting her in the crib for day time naps, so she gets a feel for it.

What are your issues right now? Hmmm...not sure I have any right this second, but that could change in the blink of an eye!

WOW, Tiff! How did you figure all of this out? Maddie was cranky last night and I figured it could have been something I ate, but I had no idea how to pinpoint what it could be!! So, hopefully I will not eat whatever it was again.

I am so glad to see so many different arrangements for sleeping. It makes me feel better about our situation.

    DD2 is 8 days old.

She sleeps pretty well (knock on wood).  We have had a couple days/nights where she was awake for pretty long stretches - not fussy, just awake.

She mostly sleeps being held, but will also sleep in the napper attachment to her PNP.

As with PP, my DD1 is my main issue right now. No naps in 4 days and she is constantly acting out - even when getting individual attention.  Oh, terrible twos...

There are lists online about what foods can cause gas to your LO while breastfeeding, I can post the food list I found in another thread for you if you want. Every food it listed are ones I've tried and for sure gave her bad gas. It's hard for babies to pass gas as easily as we do because they're sleeping and laying down all the time. The inactivity makes it harder for gas to just flow out painlessly the way it does for us. That's why, when your LO starts sitting up on their own, you can eat these foods again- they can sit up and it's way easier for gas to move through.

Going to check out that other post. Thanks, I'm new at this BF'ing thing. ;)

How is LO sleeping?  She sleeps great.. 50% of the time i have to wake her up for her feedings every 2 hours

Where is LO sleeping?Newborn napper attachment to PNP in the bedroom

What are your issues right now?She has still not gotten back to her birth weight and therefore we are on a very rigid  2 hour feeding schedule:  breastfeeding with nipple shield for 10-20 minutes, followed by bottle feeding pumped breastmilk, then I pump for 30 minutes.  To answer the first question, I'm exhausted.
