Hey! I saw you mentioned duct/air vent cleaning in your savings goals. Just FYI, I saw a Dateline last week about how there are a ton of scammers out there who claim to be legit businesses and don't do anything. They also claim it'll only be like $50 or $60 but then once they get to your house it's $300 or some ridiculous amount. Anyway, just thought I'd warn you :).

Re: MrsAshley

  • Hi! I actually saw that too, and told Michael about it when we were discussing hiring someone. I haven't started researching companies or getting quotes yet, but that segment is definitely in my mind! The before and after pictures were horrible.

I saw an ad for a company in the Valpak the other day and they say that they take before and after pictures of the ducts, which is nice. However, how you do you know all of the ducts will look like the "after" picture?  The thing I'm struggling with is - how do you really know they will do a good job?

Have you had them done? (or anyone?)

Also, our neighbor has a lot of service guys that he loves; we've used some of them and been pleased so far. So, I'm going to ask him for a recommendation as well.

  • I've never had it done although I'm sure our house could use it, it's just not something we have extra $$ for.

Yeah it made me so sick to see those guys totally ripping off that poor old woman. I get those Valpaks too and we got one yesterday actually and it had 2 coupons for places that like and it said something about a senior discount, just like they said the scammers offer.

I think the guy on Dateline said to be sure and check the company's BBB rating first before hiring them and if they're a member of the national air duct organization or whatever it is. It's a shame so many people nowadays try to rip you off.

  • Hey...I'll chime in because it's something we're trying to do right now.

Our HVAC guy recommended using Mit-E-Ducts (google them).  I think they said it'd be around $1,000 for our house.  Shoot me now.

One of our relatives also owns a company that does it and they charge $25/vent.  We haven't had them give us an estimate yet.  Let me know if you want their info.

  • Thanks girls! Unfortunately, we're in Dayton, OH.

This isn't something we plan to do on a very regular basis, but it's a 70-yr-old house and we just bought it in September. We just have a *feeling* that the ducts are gross and to me, it would be worth even $1k to do it! (not that we would blindly pay that....)

I'll definitely check out the BBB! Thanks.
