Cincinnati Babies

if your DC has been diagnosed with reflux, please come in

What were the symptoms that led to the diagnosis?  DS was a huge spitter but never fussy when he spit up so he was never diagnosed as having reflux.  DD is following in his footsteps but she is a lot fussier.  Sometimes she's even fussy at the breast.  Clearly no 2 babies are the same, but I am having a hard time figuring out if she's just a fussier baby or if there's something more going on.  So before I call the pedi, what were some of the reasons your DCs were diagnosed with reflux?  Thanks!!!

  • Unlatching over and over again, arching back and screaming. He never really got upset while spitting up, its worst when he's sleeping on his back or nursing. We started out on zantac but it lost its effectiveness very quickly...we are going on 2 weeks of prevacid and I see such a difference!

  • Would he scream when you lie him on his back?

  • DD showed clear discomfort when I laid her down, and would sometimes spit up but not all the time.  She also ate constantly, it was never ending with very little breaks between feedings.  She also would wake up the moment I laid her on her back to sleep. As soon as we started medicating her she would go longer between feedings and we were able to lay her down for diaper changes.  She still spit up some but she was clearly more comfortable.
  • Back arching was a big one for us-- he would practically arch out of my arms each feeding. He would also start eating fine but after the initial few sucks he would stop drinking and scream-- it was like he was okay until he ate then he realized how much pain he was in. He also had frequent hiccups, spit up/projectile vomited (where it was coming out his nose) on a daily basis and he just seemed uncomfortable. Zantac also did nothing for us and he has been on 15mg dissolvable tablets of prevacid since he was like a month and a half old. HTH!

  • Hmmm.....her symptoms resemble what you guys have said, but nothing near as severe.  I'll chalk it up to a fussy baby for now.  But thanks for giving me some things to be on the lookout for.

  • Do you have a copy of Baby 411?  There's a "quiz" in there that lets you answer different questions about it and tells you the likelihood.  DS was diagnosed with it around 2 mos...  we discontinued the meds around 4-5 mos when he started sitting up more

Arching back was a big one.  And he was not a spitter at all... just really fussy in the evening.

  • Audrey screamed often, would act starved but get fussy once eating, arching her back in pain, screaming often, bad eater, screamed often (I think I am still a little traumatized). She had a stomach ultrasound to make sure it wasn't piloric stenosis and a barium swallow series of xrays to confirm. We switched her from preemie formula to Nutramigen as well as an rx for zantac. It was a tough tough year for sure. I hope you get your answers soon.
