How much/often is your 10wk old EBF baby eating!?

I'm having a really hard time figuring out the exact amount my LO needs to be eating...simply because he's an EATER and cries when he's done eating so at one point he was taking 6oz of breastmilk every 4 hours, well I felt like he was spitting up way too much - he wasnt upset just spitting up randomly for a good while after eating, I bumped it down to 5.5oz but showing signs of hunger closer to 3.5hrs instead of every 4.  Well - he still seems to be crying for more after eating but if I give him the paci he'll calm down after a min or two but STILL a decent amount of spit-up.  So, now I'm wondering do I decrease to 5oz!? I have no idea what to do...he seems content with the amt of 5.5oz once I give him the paci but the spitup sometimes is ridiculous I feel like for a good 30min-1hr after he has eaten.

  • I am confused.  How do you know how much LO is getting?  Are you exclusively pumping?

I have no idea how many ounces DD is eating. She eats about every 3 hours during the day-does a bit of cluster feeding at night and then she eats every 4-6 hours overnight.  As far as ounces go, I have no idea. She did eat 4 ounces from a bottle the other day but then nursed again about an hour later, but it was also in the evening during her usual cluster feeding time, so who knows.

I don't really worry about the amount she is getting as long as she is filling her diapers regularly.

  • Are you stopping during the feeding to the the milk settle? Are you burping him during the feeding?  My LO was spitting up a lot and after a visit to the LC I discovered that it was due to a heavy letdown/heavy flow so she was getting a lot of air and getting gassy.  She was also getting so much milk and eating so fast (in an attempt to keep up with the flow) that she was getting overfull and spitting a bunch up.  So now I take her off and burp her/give her a chance to catch her breath several times during the feed and the spitting up has subsided.  I am pretty sure that an infant is just like us...it takes about 20 mins for the signal to get to the brain that they are full, so if they are eating too fast they are going to be over full.  There may be some fussing when you stop for a break, but I find a bit of shushing in her ear and rocking helps keep her calm.  HTH
  • I'm also going to assume that you're pumping?

Kellymom has a calculator that estimates how many oz per feeding your LO should be eating. https://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/milkcalc.html#calculator

Also, my kiddo was spitting up a lot in the beginning (he's 9 weeks now). Like pp, I found that it helped to burp him halway through a feeding and give him time to take a minute-or-so long break.
