The ear infection that won't go away - Part 3

Refresher:  Delaney caught a cold over the Christmas/New Years holiday and she was diagnosed with an ear infection (and yeast infection) on January 12th.  She was on antibiotics for 10 days (and Nystatin for the yeast).  She had her 15 month appointment on January 26th (which also served as her follow up for the ear infection).  Her single ear infection had become a double ear infection.  She was put on another round of antibiotics (different one - omnicef).  She wasn't able to get her shots on the 26th because of the infection, and we scheduled to come back today for the folow up.

Today - she STILL has a double ear infection!  And her tushie, while not a yeast infection anymore, is still red.  So this is over a month she's been sick.  I asked the doctor what our plan of action is now after two rounds of different antibiotics.  She is now on another antibiotic (forget the name, since we haven't picked it up yet - but it starts with an "m").  This new one is old school - tastes and smells bad, and we have to give it to her every 8 hours.  Meaning - we'll have to wake her at night to take one of the doses.  And - the side affects will include loose stools so we'll still be battling the diaper rash.  No shots again today and we go back again in another two weeks.

If this new antibiotic doesn't kick it, the next step is a shot for 3 days.  If that doesn't work - then we see the ENT.  He said he doesn't think it's her immune system that is the problem, but that she has a very resistant strain.  Lucky us.  It's one of the reasons why I hate her being on antibiotics so much - and yet, the only cure right now is...MORE antibiotics.

It's all so frustrating.  We're so blessed in that Laney is SUCH a good natured, happy little girl.  Even when she is sick - there was really no indication that she is suffering at all.  So here I'm thinking she's getting better and the poor monkey has been suffering for a month now.

And she not only gave the doctor a hug again this visit, but reached out for him to hold her - twice!  They're becoming fast friends...unfortunately.

  • Awwww.  Not fun for her or you!  But I'm glad she doesn't seem too bothered by it.  Hope this round of antibiotics clears it all up for you.

  • Poor little girl!  Are ear tubes an option?  I might be tempted to go straight to the ENT at this point but I'm big on specialists.  Hope she gets better soon!

  • Aw, poor Laney.  I hate ear infections.  We went through this with Andrew three times where we did antibiotic after antibiotic and it would never clear up.  He got tubes put in at 12 months.  No ear infections since and if he does get one, we just put the antibiotic drops in his ears. I hope the shot works for you, but if not, I recommend seeing the ENT about tubes.
  • poor baby!  hope she feels better soon!

  • Awww, it is so sweet that she's happy with the doctor, though!

I am so sorry she's still sick.  I would be insane by now!

  • Poor Delaney. I can empathize. Rachel has been sick for a while now too. She is still on Omnicef for double ear infections too and we had to break out the nystatin the last couple of days.  But her nose started running again and she's been pulling on her right ear. I have a feeling that it's not going away. I hope they are both better soon.
