Swaddling

When did you stop swaddling?? I remember with Abraham I stopped pretty early on because he always *seemed* uncomfortable. Now Moses is acting the same way, he'll screech and move around to try to get his arms out until I unwrap him. Is this normal?? I thought Abraham was an exception, but now that this one is doing it too I'm wondering if it's normal and if I should just give up on swaddling all together??

Re: Swaddling

  • I stopped at exactly 3 months, and was so sad!  I know the boys slept better while swaddled. The moment I finished swaddling, they were out cold!  They knew immediately it was bedtime.  However, they started wiggling out and a few times I found them with the blankets over their faces and that was it for the swaddle.

My boys would sometimes fuss while in it, and would calm down once I "let them lose" but that usually only happened early in the mornings, so I was okay getting them out.

  • evan will be 3 months on the 12th and we still swaddle. we swaddle for naps and bedtime. since he is a colic/reflux baby it's the only way it helps him actually sleep and calm down. mady was swaddled until 3.5 months or so and that was b/c i woke up and saw she had gotten the swaddle lose and around her chin. i'm not looking forward to letting go of the swaddle, right now evan's bedtime is anywhere from 8:30-9:30pm until 6-7am, once the swaddle is gone i know that will go out the window.

  • We actually stopped swaddling around 2ish months, but I can't remember exactly when. It worked so great for us for awhile, but it got to the point where Javy would work so hard to get out of it. I was paranoid about him breaking free and then the blanket getting over his face. At first, we had some issues with him startling awake, but now it doesn't seem to be quite as much of a problem.

It was SO easy to get him to nap during the day with the swaddle. He'd start to get fussy, so I'd swaddle him. Within a minute or two, he was out. Now it's a different story, LOL.

  • K did not like to be swaddled.  He did not like having his hand restricted.  So I would swaddle him and leave his hands out.  I stopped swaddling like that maybe around a month.  I would just use a blankey on him

  • Thanks! I'm just going to keep trying! I just don't know what to do with his arms. Do I put them straight down, do I fold them? Idk, I feel like everything I do makes him uncomfortable!

  • I semi-swaddled both kids. They never liked to be bundled up tighlty and they would end up waking up quicker than usual. So we would just swaddle there bodies and leave their arms free. We stopped the semi-swaddle at around 1.5 months. If you feel Moses is uncomfortable with his arms bundled up, try setting them free to his sides and see how he does....some babies may wake themselves up by moving their hands but my boys never had that issue. Good luck!

  • Sophia and Isabelle were both swaddled until about 6 to 8 weeks. They started moving around more then and the swaddling was counter productive. I did not stop for me, tho. I followed their cues and once it did not help anymore I stopped doing it.

  • I STILL swaddle Elise.  It's the only way she sleeps in her crib.  She seems to like it, though, b/c she's not napping well in her swing now either.  I just purchased the Swaddleme for 14 to 22 lb babies!  I'm going to continue to swaddle her until she breaks out of it and stays asleep b/c the nights that I don't swaddle her well, she breaks out of it and wakes up after about 6 hours of sleep and I have to reswaddle her for her to fall asleep, again.
