Probiotics

Did anyone give their little one probiotics for gas?  I noticed a mention of it in Baby 411 last week and asked my pedi this week who gave me the green light to try it.  We started last night but I wasn't sure how long it would be till I noticed a reduction.  I read a month somewhere, but I am hoping it's sooner. She suggested that I also try an elimination diet to see if it is something I am eating as well but I wanted to give the probiotics a shot first.

Re: Probiotics

  • I give both DDs probiotics (DD #1 is almost 30 months, DD #2 is 4.5 months).  I don't give it specifically for gas, so I don't know how long it will take to see a reduction.  If the gas is related to a food intolerance, then it probably won't help.  I take probiotics myself and if I'm having gastro issues, I'm usually 'restored' in a couple days.

  • We use them too, but not for gas. We started using them when J had to get on antibiotics and wanted to make sure they didn't mess with his system. Then, when he started showing a lactose intolerance (after a stomach bug) we started using them and they seemed to help a lot - he had been having really messy diapers.

Not sure about the gas, though!

  • I did and didn't notice a difference.  So, elimination diet it was.  Now I have seen a drastic difference (I have continued to give probiotics).  Rhys' problems seem to stem from me eating too much dairy.  I am able to eat a very little with out noticing a difference in him- but I decided to cut it out completely and hope to try and reintroduce when he turns 1.

  • We give probiotics when the girls are taking antibiotics.  I've never heard of it treating gas, but I don't suppose it would hurt.

That's what worries me.  I figure I'll give it a week to ten days and then if no improvement begin with the elimination.
