Hi. I have been put on a medication now (I had GD with my pregnancy and it has never really went away) called Metformin. I asked my doctor about getting pregnant with #2, if it was going to harm a baby if I was on it and he told me no. Can anyone back this up for me? For whatever reason, I thought it was a no-no during pregnancy.
We are going to wait another year, but we are on the Natural Family Planning Method.
TIA
Re: Ladies with diabetes please come in
I am a type II diabetic and I also have PCOS. I was on Metformin before my pregnancy and when I got pregnant - I came off of it. I was told that taking Metformin during the first trimester was supposed to prevent against miscarriage. So I was concerned when my doc. took me off of it. But I ended up being ok. I know there are people that stay on Metformin during their whole pregnancy - and there are some that stay on first trimester only. My doctor preferred I not be on ANY medications at all and wanted me to just stick with insulin (since it's naturally made by the body). So that's what I did. I think a lot of doctors are different in what they choose to do.
I have heard that it does pass the placenta but I don't think it's been proven to be harmful at all.
If you are comfortable with using insulin - you may want to ask what the difference would be between staying on Metformin and switching to insulin? If you think that might be an option? I am not allowed to go back on Metformin until after I stop breastfeeding. But I'm not sure what others do.
Hope that helps!
I have PCOS and type II, and was put on metformin to help try to get pregnant. When i got KU, my doctor kept me on it for as long as possible until it stopped really working to control my sugars. (I was already on the highest dose) so he switched to insulin.
Metformin is proven to be safe before, during and after pregnancy, and some people believe it helps decrease the risks of m/c in women with PCOS.

Thanks for the replies ladies...I heard that these meds can make you very fertile (I am going to have to be extra cautious).
This is the first time I have been on meds since my GD pregnancy. My blood #'s were elivated, but not to the point they would full out consider me to be full blown Type 2. My doctor is putting me on this as precautionary. I have felt kinda weird the last couple of days being on the meds.
GL with your pregnancies. I am looking forward to my next journey with pregnancy but I am really nervous knowing what I know now. I hope everyone has a happy and healthy 9 months (or remaining months)!

TTC #3 - Cycle #9
I have PCOS and had borderline IR. I was on Met the entire time we were doing treatments TTC as well as during the entire first trimester.
I was at a higher risk for m/c without being on Met.
