Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Are babies sensitive to scents?

My mantel was lacking something so I decided to get one of those flameless luminaries by Glade. It looks great and smells really good but the scent is really strong. We spend most of the day in the living room which is where the smell is concentrated. Do you think this affects her or no?

Re: Are babies sensitive to scents?

  • I would think not? I think it's really a case-to-case think as far as allergies though.

  • I don't know if you have this book, but in What To Expect:The First Year, it says this :

Unusual odors aren't likely to bother a very young infant, but some children begin to show a negative reaction to certain scents before the end of the first year. The aroma of frying onions, the smell of a diaper rash medicine, the fragrance of mom's new perfume or dad's new aftershave lotion, can all make such a baby restless and unhappy. If your baby seems sensitive to smells, limit strong odors when you can.

With that said, I would go for it with the candle. I light candles all the time and I don't think the odor is strong enough to bother V. The only scent she seems to dislike is my grandmother's Avon perfume. (I must admit, my throat burns when I am around her bc she must bathe in it.)

Thank you for the excerpt. It gave me a headache after the first 30 minutes which was why I was concerned, but she's shown no signs of it bothering her.
