s/o hair cuts

I really need to get my hair cut - it's been over a year (yikes!) and I'd like to get it done before my shower next weekend.  Since we've lived in the Indy area, I've either traveled back home or had my cousin do it when she was in town, so I need a rec of a good person place down here.  I'm on the west side (Plainfield) and would prefer someone not overly expensive.  I want something better quality than Great Clips, but I don't necessarily need a high dollar salon.

Any help would be great!

  • I just can't pay the $40-50 that so many charge here (at least not right now) so I end up at a walk-in.  I think Super Cuts does an OK job.

Every time I find someone I like for around $30, they raise their prices.

My MIL lives in Elkhart and has been going to the same guy forever - he still only charges $18 and does a great job.  Such a steal.  Sometimes I go there when we visit, haha.  I think for cut and color she pays about what we pay here for a cut at a salon.

  • I highly recommend Studio 51 in Plainfield. It is just west of downtown. Any of the stylists in the salon are great! I used Elaine at Studio 51 for years and I love her. Just switched because I don't live in Plainfield anymore. Good luck and enjoy your day at the shower!

  • I too will not pay the outrageous amounts some places charge. I always go to the Aveda student salon in Castleton Mall. LOVE it. I know some freak out at the idea of students doing your hair but they do a much better job than people at like Great Clips, SuperCuts, etc. IMO. And you get a massage as part of the deal. It's like $18 I believe, and they won't accept tips.
  • My co-worker just passed along some information to me on a salon in Brownsburg.  It is called E.M. Studio Salon and their level 1 stylists start at $27 and they don't accept tips.  I've thought about trying it out, she loved it, and she has really cute hair and drives all the way from Noblesville to go there.

  • The Tyler Mason salon on 10th is great.  It is ~35 dollars for a haircut and they do not allow tipping so that helps.  Michelle cuts my hair and I love her!  It is near 10th and Raceway just outside of Avon.

I went to an Aveda training salon in Louisville and loved it.  Ours was $25, but included a hand massage, scalp massage, drink service and no tipping.  I never had a bad haircut over the 4 years that I went.  I'd totally check it out!

  • Thanks ladies!  I think I'll call around tomorrow and see if someone can get me in early next week.  I've already got a mani/pedi scheduled for the day before my shower and DH mentioned that he'd like for me to have a prenatal massage soon too!  I'm thinking I'm going to look (and feel) like a whole new person!
