2nd Trimester

If you've done an elective ultrasound

I told DH last night that I thought a fun V-day present for us both would be do an elective ultrasound.  Specifically I'm dying to know the gender.  We'll be one or two days shy of 17 weeks depending on what day we can schedule.  DH is worried they might get the gender wrong.  If anyone had one done prior to 20 weeks was the gender pretty obvious?  I think it would be a fun (and beats waiting until March 7th! to find out the gender) but don't want to be worrying that we were told incorrectly.

Re: If you've done an elective ultrasound

  • I found out at 16 weeks 3 days that it was a girl. I have had 2 friends do it around the 16 week mark and they were right as well. They can never be 100% sure until delievery. I say if you want to do it go for it!

  • We found at an elective ultrasound at 15 weeks that we were having a boy...it was pretty obvious and confirmed again at our anatomy scan.
  • I had mine this week and found out it is a boy :) My ultrasound lady said she has done over 2,000 ultrasounds and only been wrong 3 times that she is aware of. As in the case of PP, it was pretty obvious. It has also been the best money we have spent so far.

  • Well, I had an anatomy scan at 20 weeks that was wrong, and an elective ultrasound at 22 weeks that "confirmed" the wrong answer, so I'm a little jaded. lol.

  • im just lurking on here from 3rd tri..

do you mean to do a 3d/4d ultra sound?? If so i would wait a little while somewhere like 27-32 weeks to get that done because the pictures will be so cool. Annnd as for the gender, I found out i was having aboy at about 18 or 19 weeks but it was a 2d ultra sound.. I know thye say the earlier you do them before 16 weeks the less likey they are right. Go ahead.. get it done, but dont cut off any tags yet! lol

    good luck

  • I was 13 weeks with DS (they were right) and with this pregnancy I also went at 13 weeks, very clear shot that it's a BOY !!

  • Thanks for this post. I'd never even heard of elective ultrasounds, but i just spent the last hour finding a place nearby and I'm booked for Sunday. I don't even care about the gender. I just want to see my little wiggle worm again!
  • 2 of my girlfriends referred me to someone. She was right with both of theirs at 17 weeks...I went at 17 weeks and between the elective and the anatomy scan, both said Girl...
  • My siggy shows the 3d/4d gender test we did at 15 weeks and you can clearly see a penis. We also have another 3d/4d scheduled for 28 weeks to check him out when he is more developed. Our elective ultrasound place gives you a discount if you come back..so it only cost us an extra $40 to find out the gender. Totally worth it!

Well, what you are looking at is actually the bottom of the abdomen and the legs. The knob in the middle that resembles a turtle's head peeking out from its shell is the penis. That is how it is obviously a boy.

Not sure how you see a head, legs, and arms in there....

  • We found out at 15 weeks exactly.  The 2 u/s techs said that they were both 200% sure that he is in fact a "he".  I had a normal Dr.'s appt. at 17w 6d and she agreed that he is a boy. :)

    Me: 30   DH: 32
    TFAS since May 2013
8/14 - Bloodwork showed heterozygous MTHFR gene mutation and elevated AMH (but no cysts)
9/14 - HSG, Hysteroscopy and laparoscopy showed tubes clear, but found and removed Endometriosis, scar tissue and 2 small benign masses on my tubes.
11/14 - Daily ultrasounds confirmed that my follicles are not releasing the egg and every other day blood draws showed very low progesterone... DH's SA was near perfect
12/14 - moving onto meds!!! Hold up!!!  Surprise BFP after only taking the progesterone!  Now what do I do with all of the other meds we already paid for?!  Due at the end of August 2015 Beta#1- 4434 @ 22DPO  Beta#2 - 7335 @ 25DPO Beta #3 - 14429  @ 28DPO

  • We had an elective ultrasound at 14 weeks and the tech said she was 70% sure it was a girl. We decided to wait until 20 weeks to confirm before we bought any clothes or bedding.

20 week scan scan said that they were certain it is a girl.

  • I had a somewhat late (but within ok time frame) NT scan yesterday, and the US tech was 80% sure we have a girl! We arent getting to excited until the anatomy scan... but... I think it was pretty clear there was no penis.

  • I think 17wks will be pretty accurate. The anatomy scan is normally done between 18-20wks so thats just about there!
