Baby Names

Sophia/Sophie opinions please!

Okay how many Sophia/Sophie's do you know/have you heard of? I am assuming its popular but I do not know one baby born in the last 5 years with this name.

And which do you prefer? Sophia or Sophie?

I really like it spelt with an "f" instead of the "ph" but I also prefer Sofie and think it just looks better spelt Sophie...... stumped!

Re: Sophia/Sophie opinions please!

  • I know 3 little girls under the age of 2 with the name "Sophia"-one neighbor and two friends.

I think Sophia is a better choice than Sophie because it works better as a grown-up name (Sophie is a cute nn)

And personally I like the Sophia spelling, unless the last name is more Western European or Spanish sounding.

  • I don't know any Sophia/Sophie's and I think it's a really cute name (spelled with the ph too).  I think it's becoming more popular, but in the end it doesn't matter.  If that's what you want to name your daughter, you should! :)  Good luck!
  • I know of 2 Sophia's and 1 Sophie all under 2 yrs old.

That said, I do think Sophia is a beautiful name. I would NOT use Sophie as the first name though. Use Sophia, NN Sophie. Sophie just does not see like it would age well.

  • How many kids do you hang around with that are that age? It is when your child enters school and everything else when you meet the majority of kids your Childs age. I know 2 sophie's and one Sophia all under 3

  • I know 4 Sophia/Sofia's under the age of 3 and 2 Sophie's. I know about 5 Sophia's that are around the age of 6. I find it to be a totally overused name around here. I like them both but way too popular.

  • I don't know any Sophie/Sophia's. I like Sophia as a given name but like Sophie as a nn. Please don't spell it with an 'f'! I don't think it looks good at all.

Sofia is not a made up spelling, it is the Spanish, Italian and Scandinavian form of Sophia.

  • I knew a Sophia in HS...that's it. I like Sophia better. Sophie reminds me of the depressing movie Sophie's Choice.

  • I know it's popular right now, but I only know of a couple of Sophia's.  One is spelled Sofia and they shorten it to Sofi for a nn.

Personally, I actually prefer Sophia with that spelling and you could always use Sophie for a nn...

    Good luck!

In BB's defense, she didn't say it looked made up. Just that she didn't think it looked good. I agree. While Sofia is a legit spelling, I think Sophia is more pleasing to the eye.

  • Thanks ladies! I agree, I think the spelling "Sophia" is better for the nn Sophie (which I love the most.) BUT I just love screen writer Sofia Coppola so I think that is the only reason I am liking the "f" in there!
  • Sophia is currently ranked #4: https://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/popularnames.cgi

Personally, I don't know any babies named Sophia/Sophie, but most of my friends have not yet had children. Sofia is the Latin spelling, so I think that works especially if you're of Spanish/Italian/French decent. But that may cause a lot of future misspellings.

I think it's totally up to you. It's a lovely name, but it's too popular for me.

  • We are going with Sophia, NN Sophie. We do not know anyone with daughters names Sophia (and we have a lot of friends with kids) and were a little devastated when we saw how popular it really is. We love the name, and are going to use it anyhow.

  • Sophia/Sophie/Sofia is by far the most common girls name at the school where I teach, and almost all of them are 2nd grade or younger.  It's a beautiful name, but it's very popular.

  • I don't know many little girls, but I do know one Sophia who goes by Sophie.  I think it is wildly common.

Just fyi, if you love the name Sophie, it is actually NOT a nickname for Sophia.  It is the French version of the name.  It's a real, grown up name that many adult women have had.  Personally, I far prefer it to Sophia.

  • I don't know any.

Depending on your area, a name may be less popular than it looks on the SSA list.

Sophia is a lovely name. I think the PH spelling is slightly less of a hassle, since it's the most common one. I vastly prefer Sophia/Sofia to Sophie/Sofie as a full name.
