Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

At what age did your LO drop to one nap?

DD is 17 months old and still takes two one hour naps a day.  She goes to bed around 7/7:30 and then sleeps until about 7am.  She goes to bed around 10-10:30 for her first nap and then again around 3pm for her second...  The other morning I tried to push her first nap to see if we could do just one nap and she started falling asleep in her high chair during snack time...

How do I know when she is ready for just one nap?  Did you decide or did your LO do it on their own?

  • when she switched to the toddler room at daycare at 13 months old.   There is only one naptime after lunch (starting around 11:30).    She sleeps anywhere between 45 mins to 2.5 hours.

her bedtime is 7 and she wakes around 6am

  • DD doesn't go to daycare, she is just home with me, so her schedule is pretty much what we make it....

  • Sadly it was around 11/12 months, if I remember correctly.

One day she went in her room for her 2nd nap but never slept. Rarely will she have the 2nd nap, maybe once a month?

She does have quiet time in her room sometimes, though, if she woke early from her first nap. (Like, I'll put her in her room and hope she'll nap, but really she just plays or lays awake for like an hour. Better than nothing!)

  • It was a slow process.  I noticed that he'd do fine if we did errands in the morning and he got home and took one nap after lunch.  But if we were home in the morning, he was still wanting that morning nap.  So for a while it depended on our outing schedule.  He was officially down to one nap around 18 months I think?  At 13 months he definitely still needed two.  But even now at nearly 2 years old, he'll take two naps if he wakes up earlier than normal (like today)!

  • DS was never a great napper and not napping never seemed to affect him. Sometime after he turned 1, I noticed the am naps were really not happening. I tried just a pm nap and it worked well for us. He usually naps for 2-3 hours if I get him down at the right time. With a big brother, that doesn't always work out.

  • Around 15 months he just changed his nap schedule on his own.

  • DD has had 1 nap a day since 11 months.  LO kind of did it on her own but I pushed back her 1st nap a few hours, 1 day, and since then she's slept for chunks of 2 hours at one time.

  • between 15-16 months...it was a process there for a little bit...some days were still two, some were one, some were NONE. Eventually he just got back on track.

  • He did it on his own this month a few weeks ago, so 13 months old.

LO will let you know when they're ready.

  • DS completely switched at 6 months. *sigh* He did it on his own.

  • Not yet... and DS is almost 18 months.

He will take only 1 nap some days but he still seems to take 2 most others. I guess it depends on his mood.  He's not in daycare (work for family business with flexibility/bring him to the office) yet but I'm looking into it for the Spring. I hope by then he'll be at 1 nap just for ease of transition.
