Weight loss plateau 1 month postpartum

In the first two weeks after delivering I lost 32 pounds, between week 2 and 4 I only lost 3 pounds. I still have 12 to go to get back down to my prepregnancy weight and I'm anxious to get rid of it. I'm just wary of cutting calories too much since I'm BF'ing.

has anyone else experienced a plateau postpartum? What did you do to get over the hump and shake the last few pounds?

How long did it take you to finally drop all if your baby weight?

Re: Weight loss plateau 1 month postpartum

  • You're one month postpartum and BFing. RELAX and enjoy your babies.

I was close to 12 months after (and I had just finished weaning them) when I finally shed the last few lbs.

  • i didnt drop the final pounds until i was done nursing, which was 14 months.  but once i stopped, it melted off.

  • I lost 60lbs within the first month PP (I gained 80 total) but have since gained back 20lbs of it thanks to my anti-depressants. I just within the last month started playing my sports again (hockey) and have gone back to the gym. Hopefully I won't be on the Lexapro very long and with spring and better weather coming up I hope to drop the rest of my pg weight and a bit more too.

People keep telling me to cut myself some slack though and that it will eventually come off if I work at it. I didn't gain 80lbs overnight and it's not going to come off overnight either (much to my dismay...) You're only a month out so just keep working at it. I wouldn't cut cals either if you're BF'ing.

Ditto!  I've seen too many women have irreversible supply issues caused by trying to lose weight too fast.

I was about 5lbs above my pre-preg weight by 3 months or so (same as you, fast, then slowly.)  My body was forever reshaped, though, and that took a lot longer (well, the extra skin just got worse the more I lost.)

The last 5lbs dropped practically overnight when I weaned at 19 months.  It's not like I was underweight and needed that weight to keep up, I just couldn't lose it while BFing.

Then I started IF treatments and gained like 20lbs over 2 years.  ARGH!

  • I gained 65 and lost 50 in the first month or so.  The last 15 is still hanging around.  I suspect it won't go away unless I start to diet and exercise.

ETA: I agree with the others that you should wait until you are done BFing to embark on a diet.

  • It's very normal to drop a lot of weight then slow down. Give yourself a break! It took 9 mo. to gain the weight, give your poor body at least that long to drop it. Definitely watch your calorie intake so you don't end up with supply issues. Finally, BFing will likely cause you to continue losing (albeit at a slower pace). Don't be surprised if the last couple pounds are gone in a few months.

  • I am having the same problem!!!  I am up about 15-17 from where I started.  I gained 54 pounds total, so I lost the first 30ish pounds really easily. I am now at a standstill...so frustrating, but I am trying to be patient since I know that BF is important and I need the calories to keep my supply up.
  • I gained about 60 lbs.  40 were gone in the first 2 weeks, and by my 6wk appt, I had 10 lbs left to lose (per my scale - the doctor's scale had me a whopping 10# over where mine did).  At 13 weeks out, I've got about 8 lbs to go. I will say that, even though I still have weight to lose, things are still shrinking and flattening out and my clothes keep fitting better and better.

I just joined a gym and will do that + Lose It! on my iphone to lose the last few pounds.  My goal is to lose it by the anniversary of my BFP, which is 3/19.

  • I lost 26 of the 34 in the first two weeks.  The rest slowly came off by 12 weeks, and I held onto 5lbs until I stopped nursing.  I'm not as strong as I once was (but will be this spring), but I'm the same size and shape as pre-pg.

It can be done, but not in the first month. Relax. You just had full-term twins. Big Smile

  • My weight loss was very similar to yours, after the 1st month I lost a pound or two a week, just walking and doing some pilates after 6 weeks. I lost all 55 lbs I gained in less than three months. And don't worry about the people telling you to relax...self image is important, at least to me, losing the weight really made me feel a lot better about my new mommy self and there is nothing wrong with that. Good luck!
