hi everyone,
I just found out I am Pregnant, I am
looking for options for health insurance that covers prenatal costs.
This was not a planned pregnancy and I just got a second job as a
full-time medical assembly worker. I am worried about first my new job,
will they fire me if they find out? (they technically can fire me at
anytime without reason since it is a year contract position). Do they
have to follow the Pregnancy Discrimination Act? Or are they considered
exempt since I was hired through a staffing agency?
Also if I fill out the MNhealthcare aid application will they call my employer and tell them before I am ready to even?
Or else I am in a pickle.. no job and pregnant! I want to bring a child into a good environment.
Oh, I am also a student in college! And will continue to complete my AA business degree (4 classes away!)
Re: Health Insurance
I'm new to MN but, I'm pretty sure that its against the law in every state to be fired for being pregnant. That doesn't mean though that a company with poor morals wouldn't try to fire you over a different petty reason so, I would suggest to just stay on top of your work and don't give your employers a reason to fire you--get what I mean?
I'm not sure about MNhealthcare but, I don't think they would notify your employer that you are pregnant but, they might verify your income in someway. I would check with the organization that handles MNhealthcare about this concern.
Try not to overload yourself with too much stuff (two jobs and school), pregnancy can be tough some days! I worked just one full-time job and took 4 classes while pregnant with my DS. But congrats and good luck with everything!
If you apply for MA, they will not call your employer.
They will only require paystubs that prove your income.
That might be a good option if your job is a temporary job. It is much easier for pregnant women to get care. And even if you don't qualify for MA, you could qualify for MinnesotaCare, which will charge you a small monthly fee. But much more manageable than getting insurance on your own if you can't get it through your job.
if you don't qualify for MA or MinnCare, I'd either look into a birth center birth or home birth midwife. Both those options are going to be a ton cheaper than the hospital out of pocket. You can also call local OB offices and see if any offer discounts for cash payment, some do.
But the likelihood of getting private insurance is extremely low if you're already pregnant. They are allowed to deny pregnancy as a pre-existing condition, and many policies that will give you maternity coverage immediately are going to be extremely cost prohibitive.
Actually pregnancy cannot be a reason to deny covarege. And under new laws put into place in 2011, no insurance can deny due to pre-existing conditions.
https://www.dol.gov/ebsa/faqs/faq_consumer_hipaa.html
It reads: "Under Federal law, certain preexisting conditions cannot be excluded from coverage (pregnancy; newborns, adopted children, and children placed for adoption within 30 days; and genetic information in the absence of a diagnosis). States may add to this list. For example, a state may add cancer, so that plans cannot exclude it from coverage, even if you received treatment during the 6 months before enrolling in a new plan. "
read your link a little more carefully. There is a HUGE difference in private insurance plans and group health plans. Including what they can and can not limit coverage on.
