Has anyone ever delivered in Family Beginnings?  Just wondering about your experience!

Re: Miami Valley Hospital

  • You should get a couple responses here from the other Dayton girls...

I delivered at MVH, but not Family Beginnings. I was induced and had a pretty good experience at MVH-- no real complaints. The only negative thing I have heard about Family Beginnings is that it's first-come, first-served. So if you go into labor and they are full with no rooms available-- which has happened because that is the only center like that for awhile around us-- you have to birth in a regular room. But the regular birthing and recovery rooms are nice and spacious, so it wouldn't be the end of the world, just a different experience, I suppose.

  • I was all set to deliver in Family Beginnings but they were full when I arrived, and by the time they had an opening my bp kept me out.  The rooms are gorgeous, and I like that they have their own nursing staff.  The only downfall is you can't bank on delivering there because if they are full, you have to go to the regular unit (which is still really nice) until someone delivers and they move them to recovery.  I would still give it a shot if you are wanting that kind of birth experience.

With that said, I had a fantastic experience overall at MVH with my attempt at natural birth, great nursing staff, their delivery rooms are huge, and even though I ended up with a c-section (which was b/c of an unknown uterine defect, nothing the hospital did/didn't do) I will deliver there again hands down.  They also have FANTASTIC food, which really you don't think about until you're stuck there a week recovering.  I didn't want to go home, lol.

ETA:  Forgot to say that if you are planning a water birth or using a tub, holy cow those whirlpool tubs are awesome at Family Beginnings.  I soaked in the tub for a while in the regular unit, but they're like half the size of family beginnings.

  • Ahh, yes-- can't forget the food. Their food is good that I would have happily stayed there longer. Whenever people say they couldn't wait to take their baby home, I think they are crazy. I would gladly have stayed at MVH and had them feed me for the next three weeks. Or more.

  • I delivered at Miami Valley:)  It was great.  Of course as most births things didn't go quite as planned....

Dr Horlacher (and Dr Woods) were my doctors and I was all set to deliver at Family Beginnings.  But my body had different plans, my  water broke at home at 8 pm on Saturday night.  My contractions never started.  They had me come in to Family Beginnings at 8 am Sunday and we got our room (which are amazing).  I got my nurse (also amazing) and she started working on trying to get my contractions going.  Of course nothing.  So after hours of trying I had to go to the regular labor and delivery rooms to go on pitozin (sp?).  I got to keep my nurse from Family Beginnings:)  She let me do all the things that they would of let me do in Family Beginnings, except the whirpool of course.  So I pretty much walked around, bounced on the ball, and hung on my DH.  I delivered that night around 10 pm.  Dr Guy delivered Cedric (he is on call for my doctors one weekend a month).  (Pretty sure those are the 3 main doctors that do the water births).   I got to put Cedric on my chest right away while they cleaned him up on me.  They left us alone and I nursed for about an hour before they came and did whatever they do (really clean him up, tests, ect) which they did right in the room.  Then they said that our room was still avaliable in Family Beginnings if we wanted to go back!  So of course we said yes:)  We switched rooms and finally got to rest.  Cedric stayed with us the whole time, he was never out of our site the whole time at the hospital.  Which we were there for only 24 hours after Cedric birth.  Family Beginnings lets you go home then if you want.

The rooms are great.  A huge bed for DH and I, a cradle for LO, glider and other chairs, huge bathroom with the whirpool.  They are meant to be like home.  Of course the nurses have to come and check you every so often, but pretty much leave you alone if that is what you want.  There are only 3 rooms, first come first serve.  And no drugs.  I am TTC now and want 2 more babies, I plan on using Family Beginnings for both births (if all goes well!).  They are the best and I would tell anyone who wants to try to have a natural birth to try it.  If you decide that you want/need drugs they transfer you no problems to the other delivery area.  You (and your SO) need to take classes which are one night a week for a few weeks.  They aren't bad at all and you do learn a lot.

Hope that this helps some:)  Kind of just started typing and it kept going.  Any more questions just ask.

  • RyRy it is so great to hear your story. Unfortunatly my story is pretty similar to Superchicy's. I had planned on giving birth in Family Beginning's, but it was full when I was there. Long story short I ended up with an emergency C-Section anyway. So just the moral of the story is hope for the best but plan for the worst (not that giving birth in the reglar part is the worst just using the old saying :) )  The nurses were awesome and the food was great. I had a great experience there and will definitly deliver at MVH (and hopefully) FB again
