Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Seriously? Temper tantrums already?

Holy cow!  My son is 13 months and he's already throwing temper tantrums.  If he wants something and I take it away or put it out of reach, he'll have a full blown melt down with screaming, arching back, you name it.  The other day he actually bit me on the shoulder when I was holding him after one of his meltdowns.

This seems way too young for this, in my opinion.  So I guess I need advice...is this normal or not?

Re: Seriously? Temper tantrums already?

  • My DS started having some tantrums around 18ish months but I know my friend said hers son started at 12 months...so I would say it's normal..he's just learning how to express himself and he's gonna show it..haha! Good Luck!!

  • DD just turned 13 months yesterday and has also started insane temper tantrums! If she wants something and I say no, she flips out! Screaming, squating and wont stop until she gets what she wants.  If she wants to go in the basement and I say no, she will sit there by the door screaming, LOL I hope this doesn't last forever!!
  • My DS just turned a year yesterday and has been throwing tantrums (albeit infrequently) for the last 2 months LOL.

Keep in mind the terrible 2's start in the 2nd year, not when they turn 2  :)

  • OMG, I swear my DD has been throwing tantrums for at least a month. She mainly throws them when I won't give her my cell phone! :) Seriously, she cries her eyes out and even does like an growling thing. I defintely predict trouble in my future! :)
  • Oh lord, well, I'm glad it's not just my kid at least Smile

Hopefully since this is starting so young, it gets out of his system by the time he's two.  Although, with my luck, I'm probably in for two very long, tantrum filled years LOL.

  • Yep, somewhere between 11-12 mos DS decided to start his little outbursts. I can usually distract him with a toy so they never last more than a couple minutes...but I'm mortified he will throw one when we're out in public.
  • Normal.  My son started with full-blown tantrums around that age.  They are much worse when he's tired or hungry, and they tend to come in waves.  He'll have a ton of tantrums for a few days or a week, then he'll hardly have any for a while.
