s/o tantrums - recommend a vacation spot!

Since I joined in the tantrum throwing in the post below complaining about needing a vacation, I thought I'd take my mind off things by starting to plan our next one. I've had no vacation this year since I have to use it all for maternity leave, but next year I will have 4 weeks! I'd love to hear some suggestions for where to go.

Criteria:

- We want to go someplace warm sometime in the fall or winter.

- We've tossed around the idea of going with another couple but haven't decided if it will be an adults only or family-friendly trip so I'll take suggestions for either.

- Ideally we'll be gone about a week.

- We took a cruise last year and aren't ready to do that again just yet.

- We will probably go to Florida another time, so somewhere outside the continental US would be preferred.

Ideas?

  • ARUBA! Love it there. I think I will be making my third trip next summer.

  • Costa Rica!  That is going to be my next out of US trip.

  • Costa Rica is my #1 recommendation without kids, but the high/dry season is Nov - April.  Going outside of these times isn't the end of the world if you're ok with a little rain in the afternoons, but some of the roads can become impassable.  If you want more info on Costa Rica let me know.  We gave our itinerary to 2 sets of friends and they both absolutely loved their trips.

For an extremely easy, but fun family vacation, consider Puerto Rico.  We stayed at the El Conquistador for a ridiciulous low priceline rate.  They have their own private island, it's close to the El Yunque rainforest and the Bio Bay.   We went into old San Juan for a day to tour the forts.  It was a reallly inexpensive vacation, but so.much.fun.  We're actually considering going back for a quick 3-day vacation over Jake's spring break.  And that's saying a lot because we rarely go to the same place twice (Disney World excluded).

My sister would recommend St. Croix (her boyfriend lives there), but I don't have any personal experience.  Her pictures are gorgeous!

  • British Virgin Islands - Seriously the most beautiful place I've been outside of Hawaii.

You can fly into St. Thomas and take a short ferry over to the BVI's.  I would recommend staying on Tortola, the biggest and main island and then taking day trips, if you choose, to the other islands (Virgin Gorda, Yost Van ***) and the snorkling is amazing.  We stayed 3/4 of the week in Tortola and about 3 days 2 nights at the end of our trip in Virgin Gorda.

Unlike the US Virgin Islands there is virtually nothing commercialized in the BVI's and the food is amazing!  Honestly probably the most relaxing vacation we have ever been on, we went just DH and I before Leah, but we saw plenty of people with families, you could honestly do either.  And it would be a blast with other couples.

Here are a few of our pictures:

  • I'm heading to Cabo in a few weeks.  I can let you know how it goes :)

Otherwise, I love Cancun.  We always have a great time when we vacation there and I like that it is relatively easy to get to without having to travel all day.

  • We did the USVI for our HM and while we had a nice time on St. Thomas, we know that if we went back, we would definitely stay on St. John.  2/3 of it is a National Park and it's absolutely gorgeous.  You'll definitely need a 4 wheel drive vehicle, but can get by with just taxis.  Fabulous hiking, great beaches, gorgeous snorkeling.  St. Thomas is very commercial and it's where all of the cruise ships park.  St. John is laid back, rural, and much more out of the way.
