not only is Fern's brother carrying around a dagger and a BB gun like it's no big deal, but he then takes the BB gun to school with him. I'm pretty sure that 1) no parent would let their kids play with him these days, and 2) he'd get expelled from school if he brought a BB gun in.
Times really have changed.
(Oh, but I'm super excited to be reading real books to DS now. )
Re: NBR: So, in chapter one of Charlotte's Web,
Just looking back at the movies we watched as kids surprises me too. Maggie keeps asking for the Fox and the Hound but isn't it pretty violent at the end and one of them dies?
How is he liking the chapter books? I wonder about them for Maggie but I don;t know if she has the attention span yet.
So far, he is enjoying them. I have to pick the right ones though. The Mouse and the Motorcycle was actually a bit too advanced for him vocabulary-wise, but he liked it because "a mouse rode a motorcycle," LOL. We read a chapter at a time, and I have noticed if it goes too many pages without a picture he loses interest. I'm not sure how Charlotte's Web is going to go over once we get to the end. He generally doesn't ask to read chapter books--just gets excited if I offer it--so I might "forget" about the book for a while once we get close to the end so that I can gauge his potential response to it.
I remember Fox and the Hound being extremely sad--I'm pretty sure that it was the first time that I realized your friends might not always be your friends. I looked up the summary of it and neither the dog nor the fox dies, but the fox almost does. Things aren't really the same at the end.
