We waited on purchasing a pump... then Liam came 12 days early. Because he was in the NICU during our stay, I had to pump and then the nurses brought him my colostrum to the NICU for feedings. They used the Medela Symphony in the hospital, gave me all my pump parts to keep and apparently it sells for like $1000. So we decided to rent the pump from the local pharmacy. It's the same model and works great. We pay $75/month so even if I pump for 4 months it's still cheaper than some of the other pumps out there.
If you have the money, will be pumping A LOT and need to behandsfree, get the Medela Freestyle ($380). It's truly badass.
If you need a workhorse pump for going back to work, get theMedela PIS ~ it looks like a briefcase ($280).
If you're at at-home pumper, the Ameda Purely Yours ($160) willdo the trick. And of course, you'll want a simple hand pump for traveling andsuch ($35).
The LC that taught our breastfeeding class recommended the Ameda Purely Yours or the Medela PIS. The hospital I'm delivering at uses all Ameda pumps and she made the points that Ameda is a closed system so no milk can get in the tubing which makes it easier to clean/sterelize. I also had a friend who has used this pump for her 2 children when she's gone back to work and loved it and it was cheaper than the medela... so I bought the Ameda. You can buy the Ameda (with a carrying bag, milk storage bottles/cooler) online at Amazon for right at $200 so its comparable to the Medela.
I have a Medela PISA that I got at the MCX on sale for $190, HUGE steal. (it's the one that looks like a tote.) It's INCREDIBLE. It has a let down mode that goes for 2 min to get you to have let down, and then once the milk starts raining down it gets the longer suctions going. It is SO efficient and comfortable and... I love it. I am a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan.
We get discounted pumps through my work, so I went with the Medela Freestyle and I have to say I LOVE it. LO is 2 weeks old today and I've been pumping daily for the past week to start buliding my supply for when I return to work and it is much easier and comfortable than I expected it to be. Also, since our hospital has Medela pumps, I asked to learn about the pumping at the hospital and they brought me the parts to go with the hospital pump (Medela Symphony). The parts for the pump also work on my Freestyle, so I saved $75+ by getting a free second set of all parts for my pump. It's so much nicer than having to clean all the time. The pump is more expensive, but since I will be pumping often once I go back to work it was worth the money for me.

I bought the medela. I was going to rent but the cost of renting for a couple months was the same price as buying my own. I had planned on breast feeding but MJ and I had some issues so I've had to pump since the 2nd day.

It really depends on your needs and lifestyle.
