When did you start internal exams?

I can't remember and I will be going for my 37 week appointment tomorrow.

Re: When did you start internal exams?

  • I think they started at 36 weeks.  I remember having two, being completely closed both times, and then T came early at 38 weeks.

fun times for you tomorrow :(

  • The fun started at 36 weeks for me!
  • 36 weeks for all three of the kids
  • With DD at 37wk, with DS I didn't allow one until 40wk. Just because it's the OB's standard protocol doesn't mean you have to do it. It's pretty pointless really, how dilated/not dilated you are has no correlation to how soon you'll go into labor.

Tell me about it.  With #2 my doctor made a prediction based on my dilation and well I was pregnant much longer.

I have to ask. Is it bad? Or no different from a pap?

I would say slightly worse than a pap because things are more engorged than normal.  The membrane stripping was very uncomfortable.

Mine started at 37 weeks. It is a little more pressure then your regular paps. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Just alot more bleeding afterwards. I do hear that stripping your membrane is pretty painful. Haven't done that yet...thank goodness.

  • Mine started at 37 weeks. I thought there was more pressure than a pap, but it wasn't painful. I guess it depends on if your Ob has little hands. And I didn't have my membranes stripped. Oh, and I was dilated 5 cm for three weeks and had to be induced at 41 weeks. I thought the internal exam was pointless.

18 cycles (3 with our RE) - Metformin + Clomid + HCG booster did the trick!

It totally depends on your body, swelling, etc.  The regular ones aren't bad, but I had my membranes stripped twice with both kids.  It helped my dilation, but it hurt and I was pretty crampy after.  A few tylenol helped though. I will say when they broke my water both times it hurt WAY worse than a pelvic exam.

  • I am pretty sure mine started at 36 weeks.  It did not hurt at all and same with when my water broke.  I actually liked going to get check to see if I progressed, sadly I never did, it was the same thing every week, until 40 weeks, I was induced!
  • I had my first scheduled one this past Monday (36 wk appt).  I also got a "bonus" one last week on a trip to L&D triage. Thankfully, my OB is much, much more gentle than the mean resident who was in triage.

Congrats on hitting full-term, Charlotte!  I'm looking forward to that on Friday Smile

  • Update:  There was no internal exam today.  He did do an U/S and said the placenta is showing signs of the babies lungs being developed.
