Hello and good mornirng.
We just found out I'm pregnant and need to look for a bigger place. My dd is 14 months and the new baby will be here in October.
We are currently cramped in a small (800sf) house with no yard/garage or a/c. The electrical is so old that we can only run one heater/ac unit so the baby is in our room. We pay $1400 and that is bottom cheap for rent in Los Angeles. We found a townhome for $1700, with so much space and ammenities.
I was curious as to how much you all pay? With the economy and new baby, i'm hesistant to even more. I feel like I'd rather save $$ but the thought of spending one more summer in that house with no a/c kills me.
Re: NBR- How much is your rent/mortgage
I cannot imagine being in a house with no AC and only be able to run 1 unit for heat. I would totally spend the extra $300, it would be worth it.
As for our rent, here in Nor Cal, we have a 2800 sq ft hom for $2800/month. I have a 1600 sq ft condo in Atlanta that I rent out for $1k/month to cover the mortgage & HOA fees.
TTC#2 October 2011. June 2012 diagnosed with mild PCOS and both tubes blocked.
10/1/12 miracle BFP 11/12/12 missed m/c (9w2d), baby stopped growing at 7 weeks
1/16/13 BFP, EDD 9/27/13, m/c 1/19/13
2/12/13 BFP, EDD 10/25/13 Please stick little one
A stowaway on board!
Haha ours is $675, plus $106 in HOA fees (we live in a condo). But cost of living is wayyyyy lower here in KY.
You really just have to look at your personal finances/budget to figure out if you can afford it. You said there's lots of amenities, is it anything that would save you extra money that you're paying now? (ie: rent includes cable/electric/water/trash/etc) Evaluate your job security (and DH's). Do you have an emergency savings fund that you could use for bills for 3-6 mos if something happened?
We're looking to move in the next year since our condo is only 1000sf and no yard or storage space. Hoping to find a house for around the same cost we're paying now, since interest rates are so much lower now. We're just hoping we can sell our condo for a decent price since home values have dropped so much. I kind of wish we were still renting so we didn't have to worry about selling our place in order to move.
GL!
I live in LA. We have 2 bed 2 bath, central air and heat. We pay 1725, we were paying 1580 but when the new baby we didn't want to sign another year lease not knowing where life is going to take us.
You can definitely get larger and better than what you have. Not sure where in LA you are.
nor cal here ... $1800/month (rent) for an 1100 sf sfh 3/2 on a corner lot in a so-so neighborhood.
I live in the eagle rock area of Los Angeles. Given my DH job is in the westside, and my job is in Glendale, we have to pick a place close to my job. L.A. is tricky as areas and neighborhood change from block to block. We'd be moving from and iffy but safe block to a very safe community, MOnterely Hills.
Our house is about 1100 sq ft and we pay $1420/month + $65/month in hoa fee.

smoke me a kipper. i'll be back for breakfast.
We pay 1751 a month in rent. We have a 700 square foot 2 bedroom with no outside space, no storage, no in-unit laundry (and our on-site laundry room is closed until June while they do work on the building) and on-street parking wherever we can find it. In NYC terms what we have is an absolute steal, to the point that we can't move out of the city to save money because the commute in would cost more than the difference in rent (the further out you go the lower the rent, but the higher the commuting cost).
If $300 a month is affordable for you and won't drastically alter long-term plans, savings, etc I would do it. Quality of life is important.
Las Vegas- We bought at a good time and then turned around and bought another home in 2008 that was a forclosure- so it was steal.
Primary home- 2900 square feet- mortage $2,022 month
Rental home- 1200 square feet- we rent it for $1150, and our mortage is $750
We pay about $200 for both homes in HOA fees.
We pay $1,350/mo. and our house is 3200 sq. feet. 4 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath, full basement.

We pay $2400 for our home here in Minnesota... 3500 sq. ft. and it's about 12 years old.
We've got a rental in the SF Bay Area that costs the same and is 1200 sq. ft., built in 1963.
I swear, I will never be able to live anywhere but MI. My jaw is literally dropping at some of these prices.
We have an 1800 sq house, only 5 years old. Our mortgage is $1000.
We rent a 3 bed, 1650 sq ft condo in downtown Chicago and pay $1950 (but I think we're getting a good deal compared to similar places nearby).
We also own a 1200 sq ft, 2 bed condo in the suburbs, about an hour from the city, and get $1200 a month in rent. Our mortgage, HOA & property tax on that place is $1800 a month. (Yes, the situation sucks!)

Hey! I am in Pasadena..about 5 mins. from Monterey Hills and Eagle Rock. (Love the Awesome Playground by the way) Pasadena is a really nice place to live and we love it but it is so expensive. We are getting ripped off by our landlord (long story) and will be moving in a few months and want to stay here or move to Burbank or Glendale. But you are right, the better the neighborhood the higher your rent. I have been looking and you can get a 1100 - 1500 sq. foot place for about $1900 give or take a few hundred.
We pay $2900 in rent for a 3/2 and 1500 sq. ft. The reason we are paying so much is we had very little time to look before we moved (from out of state) and it seemed like that was the going rate of the market at the time, in this area. But if we had more time to look and really research areas we wanted to be in I know we could have found something a little more reasonable. LA is a tough city to find good housing that wont break the bank. It is completely overpriced but it is what it is.
Ugh....Im jealous too! Its such a rip off down here!
Mortgage was about $1400 a month until we refinanced a couple months ago. Got a slammin' interest rate and now it's $1058 a month (plus $49 for association dues).

$1,350 for 1,135 sq. ft. 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (we rent).
We were paying $1,800 for a two story detached townhouse with 2 car attached garage. 1,600 sq. feet and 3 bed/3bath. $1,700 seems about right for the area. We're in the suburbs of LA (kind of- Inland Empire).
You ladies make me so thankful to live in Ohio! lol. Though I'm sure LA has it's advantages.
We live in a decently sizes 2 bedroom apartment. It''s not completely updated, but it's in great shape. We pay 525.00 a month, which includes water.
I cannot imagine no a/c with a child. We suffered when we were students but when we bought a house, we got central air.
We have a 1440 square foot home and our mortgage payment is ~$160 a week.
I am insanely jealous of everyone else too! I live in a suburb outside NYC and we pay 3600/ month for a 4 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom 2800 SF house with a 1/2 acre of property!
