NBR- How much is your rent/mortgage

Hello and good mornirng.

We just found out I'm pregnant and need to look for a bigger place. My dd is 14  months and the new baby will be here in October.

We are currently cramped in a small (800sf) house with no yard/garage or a/c. The electrical is so old that we can only run one heater/ac unit so the baby is in our room. We pay $1400 and that is bottom cheap for rent in Los Angeles. We found a townhome for $1700, with so much space and ammenities.

I was curious as to how much you all pay? With the economy and new baby, i'm hesistant to even more. I feel like I'd rather save $$ but the thought of spending one more summer in that house with no a/c kills me.

Mommy to two beautiful girls: Olivia 3yrs and Ava 1 months. I am Blessed!

Re: NBR- How much is your rent/mortgage

  • I cannot imagine being in a house with no AC and only be able to run 1 unit for heat. I would totally spend the extra $300, it would be worth it.

As for our rent, here in Nor Cal, we have a 2800 sq ft hom for $2800/month. I have a 1600 sq ft condo in Atlanta that I rent out for $1k/month to cover the mortgage & HOA fees.

  • Depending on cost of living areas you could get answers from all over the spectrum, payments in small towns are not going to be as high as yours are in LA. When we were looking for a new house the smart money advice we got was for our payment not to be more than 30% of our take home. One thing to keep in mind too is that if you are spending that much on heat/ac where you are a newer place might have a lower utility bill and help off set the higher rent payment. GL!

  • Haha ours is $675, plus $106 in HOA fees (we live in a condo). But cost of living is wayyyyy lower here in KY.

You really just have to look at your personal finances/budget to figure out if you can afford it. You said there's lots of amenities, is it anything that would save you extra money that you're paying now? (ie: rent includes cable/electric/water/trash/etc) Evaluate your job security (and DH's). Do you have an emergency savings fund that you could use for bills for 3-6 mos if something happened?

We're looking to move in the next year since our condo is only 1000sf and no yard or storage space. Hoping to find a house for around the same cost we're paying now, since interest rates are so much lower now. We're just hoping we can sell our condo for a decent price since home values have dropped so much. I kind of wish we were still renting so we didn't have to worry about selling our place in order to move.

    GL!

  • We are paying $1500 for a 900sf condo.  I would love to move into a house but we just can't afford it right now.
  • The house we live in is 1800 sq ft and our mortgage is just over $1000. We also own a rental that is about 1200 sq ft. Our mortgage on that house is $700; our tenant pays us $800. We live in an area that has a relatively low cost of living, though.

  • I live in LA. We have 2 bed 2 bath, central air and heat. We pay 1725, we were paying 1580 but when the new baby we didn't want to sign another year lease not knowing where life is going to take us.

You can definitely get larger and better than what you have. Not sure where in LA you are.

  • nor cal here ... $1800/month (rent) for an 1100 sf sfh 3/2 on a corner lot in a so-so neighborhood.

  • I live in the eagle rock area of Los Angeles. Given my DH job is in the westside, and my job is in Glendale, we have to pick a place close to my job. L.A. is tricky as areas and neighborhood change from block to block. We'd be moving from and iffy but safe block to a very safe community, MOnterely Hills.

  • We pay $1200 for our mortgage (but we live in a small town in Utah). We used to pay $1600 when we lived in Salt Lake City for a 3 bedroom townhouse. It was worth it to us!
  • Our house is about 1100 sq ft and we pay $1420/month + $65/month in hoa fee.

  • When we lived in the Glendale hills area 2 years ago, we paid $1375/mo for a 2b/2b with only an air unit in the living room, but it was a great area and everything was close and safe.  We ended up buying a house in the Inland Empire that has a 1/2 acre lot, 3 b/2b and central air and we pay $1400.  There isn't much going on around here, but its quiet, safe and its our home.

  • We pay 1751 a month in rent. We have a 700 square foot 2 bedroom with no outside space, no storage, no in-unit laundry (and our on-site laundry room is closed until June while they do work on the building) and on-street parking wherever we can find it. In NYC terms what we have is an absolute steal, to the point that we can't move out of the city to save money because the commute in would cost more than the difference in rent (the further out you go the lower the rent, but the higher the commuting cost).

If $300 a month is affordable for you and won't drastically alter long-term plans, savings, etc I would do it. Quality of life is important.

  • I own a really old home (1850) and got it for a steal!  I pay $325 a month, it has 4 bedrooms (LARGE masterbed room), 2 baths (both large), large living room and kitchen and backyard.  The house is about 2200 - 2400 Sq feet.  It was a fixer upper so we completely remodeled it (gut it completely, new wires, new pipes, insolation, drywall, etc) and it's cost about $10,000 so far to restore and that's including restoring the hardwood floors throughout.  Thankfully my boyfriend is very handy so we haven't had to contract any of the work out.

  • We have a 1400 sq 3bed 2 1/2 bath house and we pay $1125 per month. We live in Albuquerque, NM and we are thinking about moving this summer to Rio Rancho ( a suburb where both DH and myself work) and will pay about the same for a larger house.

We've got a rental in the SF Bay Area that costs the same and is 1200 sq. ft., built in 1963.

  • With insurance and taxes (we have an escrow account) we pay $550 a month for a 1400 square foot 3 bedroom 1 bath home.  We live in a decent area too.  But I am in a hidden away area most people have never heard of.  Keep in mind though, we make less money here too so I think it evens out.

  • We rent a 3 bed, 1650 sq ft condo in downtown Chicago and pay $1950 (but I think we're getting a good deal compared to similar places nearby).

We also own a 1200 sq ft, 2 bed condo in the suburbs, about an hour from the city, and get $1200 a month in rent. Our mortgage, HOA & property tax on that place is $1800 a month. (Yes, the situation sucks!)

Hey! I am in Pasadena..about 5 mins. from Monterey Hills and Eagle Rock. (Love the Awesome Playground by the way) Pasadena is a really nice place to live and we love it but it is so expensive. We are getting ripped off by our landlord (long story) and will be moving in a few months and want to stay here or move to Burbank or Glendale. But you are right, the better the neighborhood the higher your rent. I have been looking and you can get a 1100 - 1500 sq. foot place for about $1900 give or take a few hundred.

We pay $2900 in rent for a 3/2 and 1500 sq. ft. The reason we are paying so much is we had very little time to look before we moved (from out of state) and it seemed like that was the going rate of the market at the time, in this area. But if we had more time to look and really research areas we wanted to be in I know we could have found something a little more reasonable. LA is a tough city to find good housing that wont break the bank. It is completely overpriced but it is what it is.

  • Our house is 3 bed/3 bath, 1300 sq ft finished and another 400 sq ft unfinished (1700 total).  We have no yard to speak of and a 2 car garage.

Mortgage was about $1400 a month until we refinanced a couple months ago.  Got a slammin' interest rate and now it's $1058 a month (plus $49 for association dues).

  • We have a 3 bedroom, 1 bath home, 1100 square feet, a huge backyard and we pay $800.00 which includes property taxes (just our mortage is around $575.00)
  • $1,350 for 1,135 sq. ft. 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (we rent).

We were paying $1,800 for a two story detached townhouse with 2 car attached garage. 1,600 sq. feet and 3 bed/3bath. $1,700 seems about right for the area. We're in the suburbs of LA (kind of- Inland Empire).

  • You ladies make me so thankful to live in Ohio! lol. Though I'm sure LA has it's advantages. Stick out tongue

We live in a decently sizes 2 bedroom apartment. It''s not completely updated, but it's in great shape. We pay 525.00 a month, which includes water.

  • I cannot imagine no a/c with a child. We suffered when we were students but when we bought a house, we got central air.

We have a 1440 square foot home and our mortgage payment is ~$160 a week.

  • 2300 for a 2bed 2 bath apartment. Its going to be so different depending on where people are living
