Fiona started screaming as soon as they asked her to step on the scale and proceeded to scream through temp check, ear check, throat check . She really doesn't like going to the doctor. She's 50th percentile for weight and 75th for height and doing well with vocabulary, physical skills.
However, she has had a problem with cold hands so I brought this up. They now want to test her thyroid and do an echocardiogram. The nurse tried to take blood (thyroid) at the appt., but it was a failure so I'll have to bring Fiona back for that.
Our echocardiogram is scheduled for Tuesday. Nervous. I know cold hands can be a sign of bad arterial flow or thyroid problems, but when I brought it up, I was seriously thought the doctor was just going to say.."Oh that's normal in toddlers"
Re: 18 month stats & cold hands
Okay, come on...doesn't every FEMALE dread stepping on the scale??? I don't blame Fiona
Wow! They had her step on a scale? I'm still envisioning Aaron being on the baby scale next week at his 18 month appt. (I'll let you know.)
I'm glad her vocab. and physical skills are good but hope her cold hands are just cold hands and nothing else. Good luck with all the tests next week.

I'm kind of hoping they let my DD step on a scale for our 18mo. checkup next week. She doesn't like sitting on the baby scale anymore.
Wow - surprised to hear about all of the follow-up tests for the cold hands. My DD hands are often v. cold and the thought that this could signal a problem never crossed my mind. I hope it's nothing for Fiona!
cold hands = potential thyroid issues?
It's wintertime. Wowza, that seems extreme. Who doesn't have cold hands (and, in my case, feet)?

Sounds like she doing great with everything.
Sorry, she has to have the extra tests. My 12 yr old has isolated dextrocardia which was diagnosed when she was 10 mths old. She has purple cold hands off and on which made me really nervous because of her heart condition. When I asked about this at an appt, her pedi wanted to know if anyone else in the family had this. What we found out is that her Grandma and DH both get purple cold hands when they are getting sick. I hope you find out that is something simple like this.
When she was younger and had have an echo, they would give her medicine to sleep. Hope it goes smoothly for you all on Thursday!
Thanks Ladies. I guess I should say her hands can get freezing cold...even when the heat is on. It's not all the time, but I've noticed it enough that I thought I'd bring it up to doctor...and the grandmother's have been making their comments about her cold hands too
I hope she'll be a trooper for the echo. I don't really know what happens during them as I've never experienced one.
Poor Fiona. Sorry to downplay your concerns in my previous response. I didn't realize just how cold her little hands get.
Good for you for bringing it up to the doctor!

My Blog

I think Fiona has an amazing vocabulary!
Sent you a text re her hands, stop googling it! Scary though. Glad they were able to get you in fairly quickly.
Haha Lisa....first thing I did when I got home..Google!
MamaBear: No worries. Made me realize cold hands probably was not the correct phrasing.
Glad her checkup went well...nice to have a checkup without shots eh?
Sorry she has to have tests done. I know you will worry between now and Tuesday but try not to. Simon has ice cold hands and feet all the time, especially at night unless we keep the heat in his room at 75 degrees, and since I have a mild form of Reynaud's Syndrome and was worried he may have inherited it I asked my pedi about it at his 15 month checkup and all she said was "Meh...all babies get cold hands and feet." Our pediatricians are all so different! (sounds like yours and M.Amy's are a lot alike!)
And I laughed when I read Lisa's comment because I was gonna say the exact same thing about staying off google. When I had my amniocentesis at 17 1/2 weeks the doctor wasn't able to see a stomach bubble so I stayed up all night long googling it and reading about horrible conditions that a lack of stomach bubble visualization could indicate. The next morning I called the office all hysterical thinking my baby had esophogeal atresia, so the doctor called me back in and held the ultrasound wand on my stomach until he finally saw the bubble. Then he lectured me to stay off the computer for the rest of my pregnancy! Anyway, good luck Tuesday and I hope it's just cold hands!
That's a great picture of her too! "Bug off, can't you see I'm READING?"
It's good that they're being thorough, but I'm going to go with thinking there's nothing to worry about, it's winter. Heck, it's like 70 degrees here, and my hands are icy.
Peeper: Great idea. And, if it doesn't help, at least she'll have fun playing with it.
MtnRider: My pediatrician is usually laid back, which is why her response to this surprised me. She's also a practicing internist though, so maybe this may explain her reasoning.
Tara - I'm am sure they are just being overly cautious and want to rule out anything more serious. Brenna had a heart murmur detected at about 3 months and she had to have an EKG, which was terrifying....but it was totally nothing. And definitely listen to your fellow bumpies and stay OFF the google!
GL ...be sure to post back here and let's try to GTG (I know, I am the one always cancelling!) when you and Lisa get back from your tropical vacations - B!TCHES! LOL
