I know this has more than likely been talked about in the past on here, but I haven't recently seen anything about it. I'm hoping to exclusively breastfeed, but want bottles for if I do need to supplement, or on nights in the future when my husband and I might want to go out just the 2 of us.
I'm just wondering how many bottles you think I should put on my registry? So far on my registry I have the Breastflow gift set that comes with two 5-oz. and two 9-oz. bottles, as well as the NUK bottle and pacifier starter set that comes with two 5-oz. and one 10 oz. bottle. Should I add any more or is that enough to start out with? I know I should test them out on baby before getting too many bottles to see if she likes a certain brand over the other, but I'm hoping to get as much of this stuff at my shower as I can!
Re: How many bottles if breastfeeding?
With my first son I got three 5 oz bottles and three 8 oz bottles. My son would use 2 bottles while I was at work so that was plenty. Luckily he did well with those nipples so I didn't have to get anymore. We got the Medela nipples and the set came with different flow nipples- we used the slower flow in the beginning.
It's tough to totally plan ahead but it sounds like you are off to a great start!
I don't plan to have any on hand... I want to EBF, and will be a SAHM. If for any reason, I do need to supplement, I'll go (or send DH) out to buy a few different types to try.
I've read that having formula, bottles, etc lessens your self-confidence to breastfeed, and often leads to supplementation where as if you didn't have it available, you'd have persisted in trying.
I also had a really picky baby when it came to taking bottles. I'm still trying to unload a bunch of Dr. Brown's that he never took (we ended up with Breastflow.)
My question is will you be returning to work? If so, you will need the bottles for daycare, but don't register for a bunch right now. Like a pp said, wait a bit and then try a few out and see what works best for you and your LO.
Oh, and one more thing to consider....washing a million bottle parts gets REALLY old after awhile. Breastflow have 4 parts, whereas Tommee Tippee and Avent have only 3. After I weaned my DS we switched to Avent with no issues and I was so happy to have one less part per bottle to wash.
I did the platex drop ins and only had 4 of the smaller ones and then maybe 3 of the big ones. she only got bottles when I was away from her at work or if we went out. I think those are great for breast fed babies since you don't have to buy so many liners. She always did really well with them, she liked the brown rubber nipples (slow flow the entire time).
But like PP said I would just register/get some gift sets that have a couple of the sizes so you have a few to try out.
I started introducing them around 4 weeks and she never had an issue switching back and forth for 12 months.
