Has anyone seen the MTV show "Skins"?

Has anyone seen the new "drama" on MTV called Skins? It's on Monday nights at 10pm and it getting a lot of press for being such a scandalous show. I'll admit, I've watched parts of it and the setting is in a high school but these kids are just WAY over the top - think massive drug use, pill popping, underage drinking, sex.. etc. Don't get me wrong, my favorite show back in the day was Dawson's Creek (which was pretty racy back in the 90s) but Skins is just really too much. Honestly it should be on HBO or something and I can't imagine most parents would be ok with their kids watching it.

DH seems to think I'm being really naive in thinking that highschool didn't have all those things but I think the show is just really too much. I hear alot of parent groups are tryring to get it pulled and/or get the advertisers to back out due to the content.

Anyway, love to hear other's thoughts......

  • I've never actually watched a full episode, but I've caught pieces of it while flipping through channels and I think it's way over the line of what should be shown on MTV.  From the pieces of caught, there is barely and acting (or should I say absolutely horrible acting) and it's all sex and "skin."  I was quite turned off by the bits I saw, I almost think it would be more appropriate for Cinemax after dark.  I guess I am truly getting old!  Tongue Tied

  • I can't stand the show.. I honestly didn't give it much time though. I found it was trying way too hard to be "shocking" and "racy" and forgot about being a good, interesting drama. I don't think it will last. I was bored stupid.

  • I haven't watched the show, but I have heard about some of the related *scandal* (advertisements being pulled, etc.) due to its subject matter.  In general, I don't understand the concerns of parents who are outraged with the show's portrayal of teenage behavior.  As I mentioned, I haven't actually seen this show, yet; but I'm pretty sure that sex, drugs (and rock and roll), etc. have always been issues facing youth in America.  The appeal of this show (and shows like it) is that it IS real.  Unfortunately, parents who scream to "get crap like this off the air" are (somewhat) delusional and their efforts are misguided.  I get that some people might want to limit their child[ren]'s exposure to certain topics until a broader context can be provided by the parents; however, IMHO, censorship does more harm than good.  Acting like issues don't exist (or never existed, as in another current censorship debate, re: Huck Finn and deleting/replacing Twain's use of the n-word) isn't the key to eradicating unsavory behavior.  It merely robs all parents of yet another teachable moment.

  • I've caught bits and pieces and its over the top IMO and wouldn't be watched by my teen or tween.

It kinda reminded me of cruel intentions mixed with the teens from traffic.  I don't know where that kind of behavior is a reality.  I mean I know kids are doing drugs and having sex, but not as it is portrayed on there from what I've seen.

My fav teen show in HS was My So Called Life...ahh Jordan Catalano...I felt I could really relate to Claire Daines.

  • I saw half of the first episode, its way over the top. It reminded me of the movie "Kids" except these teens dont look like they are in the ghetto. I think MTV is just going for the shock and awe factor

I haven't seen the MTV version, but I did watch the BBC one a few times. JenRose, funny you mention Kids, because this is exactly the same controversy that went on when that movie came out. And it is a big deal because it's somewhat of an accurate portrayal, as TTT pointed out. Is it sad? Sure, but sticking your head in the sand isn't going to make it go away.

Parents have two options - either rally against the pure existence of the show, or use it as a teaching tool, both for themselves (to get a better idea of what pressures their child might face) and for their children (to educate them on how to handle situations and the dangers of engaging in these risky behaviors). Shows like this aren't causing kids to engage in those behaviors. Movies like Kids were so appealing to me and my crowd in high school because we KNEW those kids. We WERE those kids.
