Zofran - Is it safe and does it work?

Have you heard of Zofran or have you tried it for bad nausea/morning sickness?  I don't like being on extra medication but I also don't like being miserable every single day.  I'm wondering if any of you have experienced relief with Zofran or if you know if it's completely safe to take while pregnant?  I'm getting desperate to feel better!

Re: Zofran - Is it safe and does it work?

  • It is a miracle drug for me!! The doctor prescribed it for me, it was that or go to the hospital for an IV for fluids because I wasn't keeping ANYTHING down. I say yes, doctor will give it to you if you feel horrible. Hope you feel better soon!

  • Same here- I just started it beginning of this week and I can finally function again. I was miserable and puked up everything- including liquids. I take Zofran about twice a day and it's a blessing!! I was worried (because I try not to take anything during pregnancy) but my doctor reassured me this is perfectly safe. Plus it's better to keep your food down and get it into the baby. I'm 10 weeks now so I'll probably still need it for a few more weeks. Hope it helps!
  • It's safe, but unfortunately, not a miracle drug for everyone. It doesn't drastically help my nausea, and it makes me extremely constipated. So I have stopped taking it, and just gonna try to stick it out. However, it's worth a shot because it really helps a lot of people.

Imagine a love so strong that saying hello and goodbye the same day was worth the sorrow.
  • I have hyperemesis, and the Zofran stops the constant vomiting, but I do have some low-level breakthrough nausea. Don't get me wrong, it 100x better, just not totally gone. According to my Midwife it's prefectly safe, but does cause constipation.

  • I am going to be the voice of dissent, and I am not saying this to offend anyone.

But, Zofran has only been around for about 15 years. Therefore, no longterm studies have been done on its effects. No studies have been done on pregnant people because they don't do testing on pregnant people. So, when doctors tell you this is safe, this is not from research but from anectdotal data.

This is not me saying it is unsafe, but just that no one really knows if it has long-term effects.

I have pretty bad m/s right now and have lost 6 lbs. And, my dr. prescribed me Zofran in case it gets worse. Because of everything I said above, I am actually trying to stick it out and not take it unless I absolutely have to. For me, that would be throwing up everything for days, severe dehydration requiring hospitalization or at the point of getting fired for not going to work. Luckily, I can work from home on the bad days (and I know this is not a option for others), so I have been ok holding out.  But, if it gets so bad that my lack of food is risky for the baby, I will take it. Right now, I am just miserable and uncomfortable, but I am not dehydrated or at risk for hospitalization.

Anyway, it seems like m/s is really on a continuum. If you think there is a greater risk to your baby if you don't take it...then take it. But, I only post the above because I think it is something to consider.

  • I think it depends on the person. I was pregnant and was diagnosed with severe Hyperemisis. I had to have home IV therapy and was perscribed Zofran as well. It did not work for me at all. I have a girlfriend who was also perscribed Zofran and she swears by it. I think it may depend on the severity of your sickness. good luck with whatever you choose to do. It is NO fun being sick.
  • I couldn't keep down my own saliva with this pregnancy and nothing was working.  I was throwing up at work and couldn't do my job properly.  I started Zofran and it's been pretty much a miracle.  I can get through the day without vomiting most days and my nausea has decreased tremendously too.  I still have nausea at night and vomiting occasionally, but the difference is amazing.  At least I can swallow my spit or water without vomiting.
  • It saved me!! I was throwing up almost everything I ate - morning, noon and night - and even when I hadn't ate I was dry heaving. I was in the ER for IVs to get me rehydrated and they prescribed Zofran 4mg tablets. I saw my OB for the first time 3 days later and she told me if I needed a refill to call. I needed a refill about 2 days later so I called, gave the strength and everything. They called me back and told me they had ordered Zofran ODT (orally disintigrating tablets) 8mg because they find they work better. My mom is a pharmacy tech and couldn't figure out why the ER gave me the tablets to swallow when I couldn't keep anything down. The Zofran ODT has been my lifesaver!! I start feeling queasy, pop one in, it dissolves in about 10 seconds and within 1 minute my nausea is gone. I'm 12 weeks and would probably still be puking if it wasn't for the Zofran.
