Stay at Home Moms

S/O Unemployed: What are we?

So, we're not 'unemployed'.  Most of us don't 'stay at home', so SAHM is inaccurate.  Homemaker is both outdated and inaccurate (I do not make homes for a living).  Housewife makes people scoff.  Full-time mom implies that working moms are only part-time moms.

So, what would you call us?  Is there a good term?  Or shall we invent one? :)

Re: S/O Unemployed: What are we?

  • I am also bothered by homemaker and housewife. I feel like neither of those things. But what to call us then? When I get a direct question about it I do tend to say "I stay at home with my baby" . . .

I love 'domestic goddess', but that so doesn't describe me.  I am definitely not the best housekeeper . . . :)

LOL, I suck.  I am a horrible housekeeper - cooking I am cool with but I hate cleaning

  • i just say i sah with my daughter. unemployed is not correct by the govt definition because we are out of the work force - not actively looking for jobs.

Yeah, I get that we're not unemployed.  My point was that we need a better term.

I like this!  Particularly since I'm currently a full-time student majoring in Human Development and Family Studies.

I'm not sure when the term "stay-at-home mom" displaced "housewife" and made it outdated, but I don't mind either.

sorry, i feel like a dummy now. i didn't see/read all the previous posts on this topic before i read/replied to yours! wasn't trying to sound like a repetitive know-it-all.

on forms that list a blank for employment, i usually just write "none." when people ask what i do i tell them i sah or sometimes just say 'i don't work, i have a 2 year old daughter i stay home with.'

  • I am not offended my homemaker, housewife or SAHM and have used all three to describe what i do.

You may say it as a joke, but I really am.

I take it you were not a Seinfeld fan.  I'd be careful who you say this to - it's got a whole other meaning to me.

Stay at home mom to a house of boys: two amazing stepsons, 12 and 9, and our 4 year old.
