Diaper Rash Natural Remedy

Since I figure some of you natural birthers may be inclined to use natural remedies, do any of you have ideas for treating diaper rash naturally?  DS is only 5 days old and has already developed a rash.  I'm using sposies right now until he fits into my CDs.  Not sure if it's the diapers or wipes causing the rash, but it's causing pain, so I want to soothe it if I can while I try and figure out what's causing it.

Re: Diaper Rash Natural Remedy

  • I use coconut oil.  It works well, but I think it works best if you catch it early.  Try just using water to wipe, and maybe only wipe for poop.  I remember my pedi said to do that for DS 1.

  • take a small amount of flour (1/4 cup is a good amount) and place it in a pan (cast iron is best, don't use non-stick, the chemical used to make it non-stick is harmful). cook it over medium heat until it turns brown and looks like cocoa powder. it smells a bit when you cook it, so if you have a burner on your grill, do it outside!

you'll want to mix it while it's "cooking" so that it doesn't get lumpy and stick together. once it's uniformly brown, i sift it and put it in the blender to make it softer. DH just sifts it.

we use it whenever our babies have the slightest irritation in the diaper region. by the next diaper change, it's all gone! just dab it on with a cotton ball, just like you would with baby powder. it works so well, my DCP asked me to make some for some of the other children who have chronic diaper rash. we don't use anything else on our babies - no baby powder, no cream, just diapers and wipes.

NOTE: do not use this for yeast-based infections. the flour will feed the infection.

and this. we only wipe for poop. DD is almost 5mo and we've only needed to use the recipe below (we call it "brown stuff") 2 times.

  • I've heard breastmilk can help although I've never tried it myself. I usually just give lots of naked time at that age. Definitely could be the diapers or wipes causing it.
  • Ditto using breastmilk - that stuff is a wonder drug.

Also, lots of naked butt time! Both of my babies have had a hard time adjusting to any kind of diapers, cloth or sposies, during the first few weeks of life... but both DH and I have sensitive skin, so go figure...

  • We use tea.  Teething makes her burst out in diaper rash, so we always use tea water and washcloths as wipes and it seems to keep it under control.  If it gets really bad we give her a tea bath so she is sitting in it longer.  You have to use a black tea though (like earl grey or red rose) you can't use any "fancy" flavoured fruity tea.

  • Breast milk mixed with a tiny bit of baking soda to form a paste. It works wonders. If you don't have BM, you can use natural aloe in the same manner.
  • I haven't had the opportunity to try it yet, but the woman who taught my newborn care class swears by olive oil.
  • Air. Nothing better. Take time during diaper changes. We CD, and have since my DD came home (they do make newborn/smaller size CDs--which she's still in and will be for prob. anothe rmonth, taking us to 4 months). And change frequently. We have never has any issues (knock on wood) with diaper rash between the cloth diapers and airing her out--except for when she first came home, having been in disposables at the hospital.
