Cincinnati Babies

would this be weird?

Charlie's favorite daycare teacher has cancer. She's young (24!!) and single and doesn't have health insurance because the center doesn't offer it (one of my few complaints about the place). She's going to be out of work all of March for chemo. I'm running the Flying Pig in May and I didn't initially sign up with a fund-raising group because I wasn't 100% sure that I would make it. I'm starting to get pretty confident that I'll be able to finish, and I was thinking of approaching her (and the director, if she's ok with it) about making it into a fund-raising event for her treatments.

I'm pretty close with her, she's been with Charlie since he was in the 6 month room. She's just so good to him and the other kids and it's heartbreaking to watch her go through this. I just feel like it might be weird. So, what do the nesties think?

Re: would this be weird?

  • I think it is a very kind and thoughtful thing to do.  If you approach her and the director and they are both ok with it I don't see why it would be weird.  You are helping someone who is close to you and your family.  I would be touched and truly honored if anyone ever did something like that for me!

  • I don't think it would be weird.  Especially since you have a pretty close relationship with her, she'd probably be grateful for you to do that for her.  I would definitely run it by her and the director if it were me.

  • Not weird.  In fact, it's awesome.  Where do I sign up to donate?
  • I think that is very thoughtful. This must be a very scary time for her for health and financial reasons and having someone rooting for her like this I'm sure will be very meaningful.
  • Not weird at all!!  That is so sweet and thoughtful of you. I am sure she will be completely appreciative.

  • I think that would be a wonderful and amazing thing to do!
  • I don't think that's weird at all. In fact, I think that's a really great thing to propose. Go for it!

  • Thanks! Something about it just made me wonder if it would be ok to do, or if she would be embarrassed about it or if it would just be weird in any way, shape, or form, since it's not like we're family or anything. I appreciate the feedback.

I don't think it's weird at all, unless you don't have her blessing.  I think that's the most important thing.  I think it's very cool.

  • I don't think it would be weird - I think it's very thoughtful and I'm sure she'll appreciate it.

The one caveat, though, is that any funds raised may count against her in terms of eligibility for public assistance (Medicaid).  However, if she is unable to work at some point due to her treatment/illness, it might not be an issue.

  • Sounds like a great idea! So thoughtful of you!
  • I don't think it's weird at all.  I think it's very caring and generous of you.
  • I think it's great.  I would agree with some of the PPs and make sure it's OK with her before moving forward with your plans.

  • She said yes! She also said she was able to get back on her mom's insurance last month, thanks to some of the new health insurance guidelines, but that only gives her a few months and doesn't cover everything. Plus there's all the unpaid work time, so I still feel like it's a worthy cause. I'm going to talk to the director about it tomorrow.

  • What an awesome thing to do! You are very thoughtful...kudos. Sometimes in this world we get so caught up in ourselves that we forget about others needs. It is wonderful that you are so considerate.

I am willing to donate :)
