Postpartum Depression

Zoloft and BF effects on baby?

Hello!

I started taking zoloft yesterday at 2:30pm (as soon as I got my RX...oy...I need it. :( ) and last night I had a hard time getting all the way to sleep and DS was up for 2 hrs in one stretch (which isn't normal) and had trouble sleeping the rest of the night.

This morning, I took the pill at about 8am (I'm planning to take it in the AM, I was told it could cause restlessness) and BF DS for nap at 9:30...he fell asleep and I put him in his crib, but it only lasted about 20 minutes, instead of the usual 1 hr or so. When I picked him up I started trying to rock him back to sleep and he was obviously sleepy, but his eyes were WIDE AWAKE.

Have you experienced zoloft or another antidepressant making your LO have trouble sleeping? Does it get better in time? Lack of sleep is one of the big things that has pushed me over the edge into needing antidepressants in the first place, and I don't think I can handle it getting worse.

Is there a preferred time to take it so that it has the least effect? I was thinking maybe as soon as he goes down for his first nap, so that I've recently fed him and he won't need to sleep again for 4ish hrs. What do you think?

Re: Zoloft and BF effects on baby?

  • you should probably ask your OB and/or Pedi.  I assume one of them prescribed it...did they know you were BF?

I just started zoloft and take it at night....I didn't have a problem sleeping.

  • I know when I started taking Zoloft restless sleep was a side effect that took a few days to a week to subside (I had anxiousness and shortness of breath).  I think I remember reading that if you're taking Zoloft in the last trimester they'll have you wean off of it unless you're breastfeeding.  Sounds to me like it would pass through breast milk.  As Mrs.Saxy said tho - check with your doc.  Good luck and hope you get some sleep soon.  I remember that horrible feeling and STILL at 2 and 1/2, when my DD doesn't sleep a couple nights in a row, my life SUCKS!

  • Definitely take it in the morning.  My sleep was messed up for a week and then it got better once I called the pharmacist and he told me to take it first thing in the morning.  For some people like me (and perhaps you) it ramps them up.  I also lost my appetite completely for a few days.  Your body will adjust.

Only the tinniest little bit gets into the breast milk, and so, unless your LO is very sensitive, I would guess it isn't the reason he is waking up.  Call the doctor though just in case.

At four weeks my baby developed (silent) acid reflux and that is what messed up her sleep.

  • LOL My DS is definitely sensitive to most things. I had a cup of coffee when he was 3 months right after feeding him and then he didn't eat again for about 2.5 hrs....and was WIRED and AWAKE for the rest of the day. Miserably so. I've only just now started being able to drink coffee.

I called the pedi and they said, "Oh, they aren't getting enough to mess with them I wouldnt' worry about it" which is pretty much the response I get on most things from them.

The GOOD news is that after 2 sucky days and 3 sucky nights he is back to "normal" on naps and sleeping so he has adjusted to the little bits he is getting.

I'm in that weird time period where you don't feel better all the time, but sometimes you feel okay...and then sometimes you don't. It is all very weird. I do have more energy than before and taking it in the morning is definitely a good thing for me.

    Thanks!

  • I have also read that the little amount the does get into your breastmilk peaks between 7-10 hours after taking the pill so because I EP, I just dont pump 7-10 hours after I take it. Other than that I have only been on it for two weeks but I dont think its made a difference in LO at all. Me, on the other hand, I am starting to feel much better!

     Good Luck!
