Babies: 0 - 3 Months

1 month old out and about?

My due date is 3/4 and there is an outdoor event (with lots of people) on 4/3 that we really want to attend.. I live for this event but is this too soon to take out DS? I wasn't planning on doing much for the first few months but this popped up.  Other than that (if we go) he'll be at home.

  • You'll probably be anxious to get out at that point! I think it would be fine, but you may want to leave him in his car seat and not let too many people get close to him. I don't know where you live, but hopefully the weather will be nicer by then. I have been going stir crazy with this wicked winter we've been having and would love a day to take LO out for an outing!

  • Oh I've been taking DD out since she was 9 days old. That day DH and I went to breakfast and to the grocery store. I have no intention of staying cooped up all the time. Ick!  Go and have fun!

  • Go and enjoy yourself....we've been taking LO out since she was a week old and she's been out a few times a week ever since then, she's 7 weeks today.  We've never had an issue and nobody has ever tried to touch her.
  • Our pedi doesn't want us to take LO out in public until he's 6 weeks old. She said that is her general guideline, but particularly since it's flu season.
  • Yes, go! DS2 was born in mid December and I started taking him out when he was 7 days old and we get out almost daily now.

  • I started taking DS out when he was a week old, I needed to get out of the house!

This is ridiculous especially since you are EBFing. Your pedi is a tad old fashioned.

  • Like one of the PPs, we've also taken LO out since she was a week old. We started with small trips, like a quick run into target or the grocery store to see how it would go. Alot of people stop to look at her but nobody has tried to touch her - if you're worried about touching, you could always put your LO in a sling, i've found that keeps people at arm's length! ;-)

Now at 3 weeks we take LO out all the time, she goes to her Daddy's weekly bowling league too, and we've not had any issues.

I think you'll be just fine taking your DS to the event!

  • I'd go!

We've been out and about since Lena was about a week old. After being on bedrest, I was SO excited to get out!

  • You should definitely go out! You'll be absolutely stir crazy! Everyone I've talked to has taken their babies out to a lot of places early on, it helps them get use to people and they will behave more in public because they're used to it. If you're worried about lots of germs carry squirt antibacterial with you! No one comes near my baby without two squirts lol

  • We've been taking LO out since 3 days old. Our pedi said no close-quarters public situations (like a subway) but if he's in his carrier or being worn (my preference) then no one is coughing on him or touching him. At the hospital they also encouraged us to get out ASAP if even for a walk as a preventative PPD measure.

Ironically, I will take LO to church or the mall but not a baby shower. At church or mall no one is going to reach to my chest to touch LO while I wear him. At a baby-crazy situation with a more intimate group of ladies, people might.

  • We had lo out with us when she was 10 days old.  I wear her in a sling which keeps her nice & snug and away from anyone who would spread germs by getting too close.  She's 7 wks now and both of us are thriving :)

  • Yes go out! We brought our son home three days before Christmas and then drove down to my parents and stopped at my Aunt's house on Christmas Day (lots of family and friends around) and I have been out just about every day since then - I couldn't just stay home! My son is 7.5 weeks now!
  • My daughter was born on 12/21  I first I was nervous but even my OBGYN in the hospital said to take her out.  Take her to x-mas mass etc.  It's fine just don't let people touch and keep away from sick people.   We go out all the time.

  • Yes! Plan on going out. but just plan on it not being as easy of a day for you.

We've been taking our LO out since he was 4 days old. And, this festival may be the perfect time to get your first sitter - at least for a few hours. I went out for my birthday when LO was 1 month old. It was the perfect time to reconnect with friends. My mom came over & watched him for a few hours.

  • I am sure you will have taken your LO out before a month old so you will be able to gauge how the react when out and about.  We have taken W out since she was about a week old.  W loves to go out now.  I would have gone crazy if i didn't get out of the house.
