My DH's uncle said his company will pay up to 5K in adoption
expenses for its employees. I know my job doesn't but my
husband works for a large company so I have been searching their
benefit website with no luck. Are adoption benefits common?

I work for a very large employer -- we get 2 weeks off paid immediately following placement (not for foster -- adoption only) and then they reimburse up to 2k of adoption expenses after finalization.
I've never seen a company that pays adoption expenses before finalization, but I'm sure they're out there.
My previous company offered no paid time off and 2k of reimbursement after finalization -- same industry, similar size.
For all its faults my company will give me full maternity leave (10 weeks with full pay) and $5k reimbersement for adoption costs. The covered costs seemed a little vague, but there is not a requirement for the adoption to be finalized before we receive reimbersement.
DH's company offers nothing, so he will use vacation or maybe sick time when we go pick up the baby.
My DH's company reimburses up to 5K after finalization. He works for a pretty large company. I own my own business and have only one other employee...no adoption coverage for me, but the baby will come to work with me
My husband's company has no adoption benefits (and it's one of the largest companies in it's field), and I run my own business - so no benefits there either (we are paying for the adoption with profits from my business as well as saving up for when we decide our little guy needs a little sister)
It is great to see all those that do offer benefits!
I recently started (last April) work for John Hancock Financial and I know that they do a small benefit - something like 1/3 of fees up to $3000? I can't get into the site to check right now, but it was one of the reasons I changed my job - 100% fertility treatment coverage and the adoption benefit.
Mine doesn't offer any at all. I plan on sending a letter requesting that the university look into providing adoption benefits for employees as I am sure that I am not the only employee who has ever adopted.
Thanks for all of the info!! DH's company offers 12 weeks of leave for adoption but I do not see a financial benefit on the website. I know that I can take the standard 6-8 weeks off from my office just as I would for maternity leave. I just was not aware until yesterday that some companies actually will pay back some of the expenses.

I am sad to say my company offers nothing. We don't even have a formal maternity leave policy. I work for a small company, and if a company has less than 50 employees, they dont even have to offer the FMLA 12 weeks a year. My boss was nice enough to give me 2 weeks (vacation) when we brought the baby home, but when you bring an infant home (especially one that is a preemie and drug baby) that is NOTHING.
2 weeks seems not enough to me for an adoption for an infant. Sleep deprivation alone about killed me!
Anyway, I am thankful I have a job and that I was able to take 2 weeks off, but it was really hard.
I am so sad. I work for a Louisiana school board and they offer 12 weeks under FMLA with no pay and I cannot take my 25 days of sick time unless I get a doctor's note to say I am "sick." Basically, we get jack sh!t for adoption.
I work for a non-profit hospital so we don't get any financial contributions. However, we do get the same generous maternity leave as birthing moms. Argh....I take it back. We get the same benefits but the benefits rely on State Disability, and I won't qualify....unless I break my finger at the same time :P Now rethinking it all, I will be able to take off the same time (up to 5 months) as my birthing counterparts but it will be at the rate of using half of my sick (family care) and all of my vacation. I guess I can't complain...but as previous posters said, the stress is often the same as other moms.

HTH.
Fairly common--most of the places I've worked have offered something. But you might have to ask HR directly to find out about it.
Mine offers a small adoption benefit, and DH's company just quadrupled their earlier benefit (WOOT!).
DH's company offers the 2nd largest adoption benefit, it is awesome and will be a definite help for a Russian adoption!
We are psyched and very lucky!
