Parenting after 35

**Fauxshelley**

Have you scheduled Jackson for a speech assessment?  Simon isn't talking either at 16 months, not even mama or dada ("uh-oh" is his only word), so I went ahead and made an appointment for them to come to the house to evaluate him.  They did a preliminary consult over the phone and based on the answers to their questions they said he qualifies for the initial evaluation.  The state pays for it and if he has at least a 1/3 delay for his age he qualifies for speech therapy, at least here in CA.  Our boys are probably just the silent type and they'll talk when they're ready (like my pedi says) but it can't hurt to get some exercises to do with them to encourage speech!  Also they told me to have his hearing tested, which I did at the ENT's office, and it's normal.  I still think he's got selective hearing, like all men!  Confused

Re: **Fauxshelley**

  • Simon is ahead of Jack with his uh-oh, Jack doesn't even say that yet.  We have an ARB test scheduled at a local childrens hospital on Thursday, and I will meet wit the evaluator after that.  My main concern right now is that Jack will have to be sedated for 2+ hours during the test.  That means he will not be able to eat 6 hours before and can only have clear liquids 2 hours before so he will be hydrated enough for an IV.  Yikes!  All that for a hearing test!  If it helps him, I'm all for it.

  • Wow that sounds like an intense hearing test!  Hopefully it's not first thing in the morning so you don't have to wake him up in the middle of the night to give him food or milk!  But at least he'll be sedated so it will be easier for you.  Simon wasn't sedated for his test, but it only lasted about 15 minutes.  We were in a tiny soundproof room and I had to hold him still on my lap while they put a probe in each ear and played sound.  He wasn't allowed to move his head so I had to hold it and he was amazingly good.  Afterwards they gave him his first ever tootsie pop Yes  Good luck with Jack's test, keep us posted!
