Chriopractor for Back Pain

My back has been really bad on and off for the past few weeks.  It will be fine and then I'll cough or bend over and all of a sudden I'm in terrible pain for a week and then it slowly goes away.  I can't sit, stand, walk, bend over without lower back pain.

I've had this happen to me while not pregnant so I know its just lower back pain and not something pregnancy related.  I think the preganancy is just making it worse.  I need to be able to bend over and do stuff because I have my little son at home and I have to be able to pick him up, feed him, change him, etc.

I've never used a chriprator before although I've head good things.  I was a little skeptical about going while pregnant but from what I've read it doesnt sound like its dangerous.  I just can't take the pain anymore and I'm willing to try.

Has anyone else tried going to a chiropractor??

Re: Chriopractor for Back Pain

  • I would be totally non functional if I wasn't seeing a chiropractor. Before I got the OK to see one I was at a 60% loss of mobility.

Get your OB's sign off that you're far enough along for it to be considered "safe". You will find most OB's actually recommend chiropractic care during pregnancy.

Then find a chiropractor that advertises prenatal chiropractic care. While, yes, they are all trained in it, some of them really enjoy doing it. My chiropractor is one of those. He even keeps a massage therapist on staff that has prenatal training.

  • I've been going to a Chiropractor since the Day I was born. My Dad is a Chiropractor, Its completely safe and will help allign your spine and help your mucsles get stronger. of course you need to to some stretching for the muscles. I go once a week, I havent had any problems. I also have a completely natural birth. My son got his first adjustment on the day he was born and goes with me every week too. He hasnt been sick a day of his life. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
  • Thanks for the replies!

Do you think I will be able to get relief at my first appointment?  Or will it just be a consultation?

  • yes i go twice a month for maintenance. totally worth it.
  • I would highly recommend seeing a chiropractor!  My father is a chiropractor and I get at least weekly adjustments and honestly I have almost zero pain related to my pregnancy!  I know I wouldn't be able to still be running otherwise too.

You probably won't get total relief from your 1st visit, but you should definitely get some.  This of course will also vary based on your individual complaints/needs.

My chiro did an adjustment at my first appointment, however I cannot tell you that you will get relief from it.  I was even more sore for the first several weeks, as he was getting everything loosened up.  Once my body got used to it I felt a thousand times better.

Ditto! I have a previous back injury and I could not even sit with out going to the Chiro! He had made all the difference.

  • Hi Stephanie,

I am a chiropractor and I specialize in Pregnancy care.  The care I provide to a pregnant women is extra gentle.  It is completely safe for your baby, and it is safe to start right from conception and you can be treated up to the last day if your pregnancy.

If you have back pain, even if you have had similar pain before, I would see a chiropractor who does specialize in pregnancy care or family wellness care. There are also some added benefits to seeing a chiropractor throughout your pregnancy: patients report less muscle/joint pain, ease of (morning) sickness, less pain during delivery, less intervention during labour and delivery as well.

Definitely go see a chiropractor, you will not be sorry.
