Hi.... We just found out on Sat that we are expecting and are super excited! Although we did not have a good first time making a doctors appointment. I tried to make an appt with a well recomended Dr. and the receptionist was super rude and told me the next opening wasn't until Nov 18th, that's not normal is it? I thought it was kind of late. I don't know how far along we really are since my periods are not regular, but she didn't listen and insisted that I was to use that date in estimating and that I would be 15 weeks at the time of my first visit. She said nothing about taking vitamins or anything and I had to ask her and she said,,,just take an over the counter until you see the doctor!!!!
Anyway,
I changed my mind and went with another doctor who could see me next week Monday. (And they are super nice there which made me feel better for cancelling the other apt.)
What should I expect at my first appointment? Do they generally do an ultrasound on the first apt????
Thank you for listening : )
Re: What to expect with my first Dr. Apt?
Most doctors won't do an u/s at the first appointment unless there is a need (spotting, history of miscarriage, fertility treatments, etc.) although more doctors are doing them now in other cases.
You'll probably pee in a cup, get weighed, get a pap and annual exam, have an opportunity to answer questions, etc. Are you sure you'll be 15 weeks on 11/18? That would mean that your LMP would have been in early August. Are you charting? Most OBs will have you go ahead and use your LMP date until they do an u/s (or in some cases, unless you know your O date). Over the counter PNVs are fine and most people take those before they see the Dr. (many continue to take them after they see the Dr.) It's pretty normal not to have a first appt until around 8 weeks or later.
Yup..positive that was the last period, but like I said, never have been regular which is another story for another time LOL....So I do not know how far along I am. The receptionist would just not listen at the first place and just insisted on that being the date to calculate how many weeks I was.
I know OTC are safe, but you think when I was asking her what I should do next that would be first on the list? I was waiting for her to offer the prescription...
I am now on pins and needles until Monday!! Super siked!!!!!
My first appt. is on Nov 18, and I'll be 8.5 wks along. Unless you have a specific concern about your health/pregnancy, I don't see that being particularly far off. It's only a few weeks away.?
However, if you are about 15 wks along, that does seem little far along for a first appointment. But if you're not, they can't really do much but confirm and take blood for tests anyway. They usually don't do u/s until 7-8 wks because there's not much to see before then. Possibly tell you about vitamins and foods to eat, but you can get that info from anywhere.
Good luck.

I have the craziest cycles because of my PCOS and because I told them my period date was in August and that I didn't think I ovulated til this month, they needed to get an U/s first to date the pregnancy to figure out when and how to make the appointments.... because they prefer to see people when they are 8-10 weeks along for the first appointment. I'd let them know that you really don't know how far along you are and I'm sure you'll be getting an U/s to figure it out.
Other than that, it is a urine test, weight check, and internal! And lots of paperwork.
