Questions about the zoo

We are going to take Evan on his first trip to the zoo for his first birthday. It will be DS, DH, me, ILs, my parents, my brother, SIL & her husband. I am trying to figure out the best time of day to go, where to have lunch, and where to have cake.

I was thinking about going to the zoo in the morning (Evan can nap on the way there), having lunch with the family out, and then having cake and presents at our house (in Sugar Land) after Evan has another nap.

I ran this past my mom and her only concern was with it being a long time for everyone to be together. This is an issue because my brother used to be married to my SIL (long story there). Everyone was friendly at Evan's baptism, but my mom thinks it would be better to keep it to half a day and do everything out.

Any suggestions about the time frame? I just want to enjoy my little man's first birthday party and don't want to deal with family drama. If it were only that easy.

Re: Questions about the zoo

  • Why not set up a sack lunch/picnic in the park right after your zoo visit?  That way it's all condensed to appease everyone. ;)

  • I agree with PP. We did DD's 2nd b day at the zoo. I pulled a wagon with trays from chick fil a and cupcakes. It's allowed at the zoo. We all walked around then sat and had lunch.

  • I agree with PP's. We did G's 1st birthday at the Children's Museum and his 2nd at the zoo.

Granted, it was just the 3 of us, but we did Jimmy Johns subs in the park before the zoo, did the zoo thing and then went home.

  • Great ideas. I didn't realize that you could bring food into the zoo. We can either do a picnic at the park or dine at the zoo. Thanks for the advice.

  • Oh yes, people bring in huge rolling coolers all the time. You do not want to eat zoo food. Seriously bad, at least in the original food court area. It looked like there was a slightly nicer eating area at the Africa exhibit now, but I haven't eaten there.

  • I liked the food in the African exhibit. Plus, you get to see the giraffes while you eat.

  • Wait, zoo pizza is AWESOME!  I swear, and I'm a pizza snob.  The key is to order the whole pie--I'm sure the individual slices can sit out for too long.  But a friend of mine swore by it and told me the secret--we had a big enough group so we tried it.  I would definitely suggest getting there when they open at 9 if it's on a weekend--it's way less crowded.  The elephants get their daily baths at 10, not to be missed!

Ya know, I kind of thought so too.  Maybe I was expecting it to be bad since it was zoo food, but I was pleasantly surprised.  Have eaten it in a while with Little Big's being so close, but now that they are gone, I will have to head on over for some zoo pizza :)

Good to know! I love pizza. That or the food at the African exhibit would work nicely for the family. Everyone could get what they want.

And thanks for the tip about the elephants. That sounds very fun!

  • The saddest part about zoo food is that the Little Bigs right outside of it closed. Anyone know why?
