Ummm, yeah I haven't ever brought anything that is really musical but I don't think rattles or something like the crinkly type are bad. And I think we have also brought a small toy that plays a quiet, short tune. We usually sit above the engine/near the wing so it is generally pretty loud which is good to put LO asleep, but also masks his noise a little. Plus a happy baby is better than a screaming baby - I also load my ipod touch with some of his favorites (both lullaby and happy songs). It can be heard w/out earbuds, we kept it low but let him listen to it and I couldn't hear it outside our row when I was up going to the bathroom.
Luckily he usually goes right to sleep after BFing and I just put him in his carseat and then settled in and read my kindle. ahhhh. But he always falls asleep in his carseat so that isn't anything new.
We bring small board books, a crinkly-cloth book (Little Tikes, I think), Bright Starts rings with various toys clipped to them...some off her play mat...rattles, soft toys, teethers, etc. We usually bring Sophie and her Baby Einstein music player and a small, 5" doll. And then just rotate them throughout the day so she doesn't get too bored. We also don't break out ANY toys until she's fully bored with her surroundings...the plane or airport itself holds her interest for 45 minutes or so.

yes, this is what I do too. Toys are kind of last resort. He is quite entertained by the other passengers and just looking at me, eating, playing with his cup, etc. Kind of silly but I give him a running commentary of EVERYTHING we are doing, the surroundings etc all the time, including during travel so it takes a long time for him to get bored.

We do this too. It's funny, other passengers entertain her for quite a while. They'll play peek-a-boo, sing pat-a-cake, etc. Too funny. Also, when we get our drinks, I always get water with some ice and the cup and ice are good for some distraction/entertainment. The overhead light and window shade work well too!
We haven't flown with the boys yet, but we have done some long-ish car drives and the best non-musical toy I've found is a cloth book. The kind with different textures - crinkly pages, fluffy fabric, etc. Keeps them entertained for aaaaages!
YKWIM? There are certain toys that other passengers wouldn't appreciate LOL But yeah, I can definitely see that being on the plane is exciting for a LO and I love that you give Jack commentary. I do that with LO in the kitchen when I'm cooking all the time.
Haha, you're so considerate! I never even really thought about toys' noise level...but FWIW, I think passengers tend to be more annoyed at a baby's fussing/crying more than the noises that their toys make...
We usually bring Sophie and his favorite rattle, mainly because they're soft and fit well (squished or not) into my carry-on bag with diapers/wipes/all this other stuff. And it's not too noisy IMO. But for us personally, we usually don't really even have to bust out the toys because he's more content playing with us, so we just bounce him around, let him look around at the people in the cabin/etc. So far (knock on wood), he's been on his best behavior on every flight we've taken.
I like to travel light so I've never really traveled with a lot of toys. usually I will bring 1 toy and 1 book....is that bad? like the others said, there is usually enough going on to get their attn plus you can be resourceful and find plenty of things for them to play with that aren't "toys"..... i.e. water bottle, magazine, cup, cell phone, etc
usually I will bring 1 toy and 1 book....is that bad?
Not at all! I'm not looking at bringing a dozen toys or anything. I'm thinking one new toy and book will do. Plus I have some finger puppets and all of the other things to look at on the plane as well. It's a 6 hr flight, I just want to be prepared.
Oh you guys are so lucky. We HAVE to bring several toys but actually wanly used a few tonight. Kaya always falls asleep in the car but not so much on the plane. She cried for about 10 minutes before finally falling asleep for 35. Then i had to nurse herto get her to sleep more. I agree thoughthat a water bottle works wonders. And cheerios and yogurt melts kept her happy the rest of the time. Traveling is definitely a challenge for us as she does not sit still in our laps. Not even for a minute!

oh yeah, Miss A is a handful too and will not sit still either! she will NOT fall asleep, even if she is exhausted, unless I nurse her (and then only sleeps about 30-60 min).... makes me wonder what I'll ever do in the future after she is weaned?!?!? it was soooo much easier traveling w/her when she was younger and would sleep almost the whole way...

Heh, I wouldn't bring more than this, so if you're bad then so am I.
