Mine start down low with a pressure on my cervix and then wrap up around my abdomen from the bottom. I've only had a handful that were stop me in my tracks/ wake me up painful, but pretty much have consistent contracting.
I wonder if you can have an irritable uterus? That just contracts consistently? My doctor was saying it's amazing how everytime she touches my stomach I have a contraction... I guess I should ask her huh?

I got sent home from L&D the night before I delivered because they said it wasn't contractions, it was an "irritable uterus." After they sent me home they got much much worse though. They didn't feel like they came in waves, it was constant.
I agree with the period cramps on steroids analogy. They got strong enough to make me feel sick and I couldn't sit or lie down because that made them worse.

Real contractions feel like hell. They will be totally uncomfortable, very tight and extremely painful in ANY position. When they are real you cant breathe, talk, think, anything..

definately this.although mine came in waves and my back was killing me. They gave me some pain killer to help me sleep which was nice but I woke up with each contraction.
Re: someone please describe to me...
Definitely cannot help you out there.
I've had some mild cramping and a little bit of stomach tightening (BH), but nothing consistent, timeable, in waves, or extremely painful.
