When can I put my baby to bed with a blanket?

He is getting close to outgrowing his sleep bag.

  • I've done it a few times when his room seemed extra cold.  I just used a crocheted blanket that someone made for him, made me feel better that it had holes :)

I didn't use a blanket until she was closer to 10 months, but ditto this about using a crocheted blanket :)

  • I'm still scared to let him sleep with a blanket but I let him use a muslin (breathable one) blanket as his lovey
  • both boys have had a crocheted blanket since they outgrew the swaddle and moved to their own cribs around 6 months.

  • I have been doing it forever.  He loves it. He doesnt use it to cover up- just nuzzle his head into it.
  • They have sleep sacks that will fit 2 year olds-- Garrison was in a Halo brand until after she was 1 and she was 33 inches tall and I think there are brands online that go even bigger.

I say that just to let you know blankets aren't your only option. G didn't sleep with one until after a year but I think she could have had it earlier, she had great neck strength and could move herself.  However, now that she sleeps with one every night, she NEVER uses it on her body.  She is currently sound asleep with the blanket wrapped around her head, no where else. (sometimes we go in to make sure it's loose-- last night for example and the second my DH left the room I saw her pull it right back over her face like a college kid too early on a saturday morning ; )

  • "They" say a year I think.

Can you do footie jammies with socks underneath? I also did a thicker (not puffy but just something more than a sheet) waterproof mattress pad w/ velour crib sheet which really helped keep in heat.
  • We started at 10 months, less for warmth and more for comfort. What about putting a onesie under footie PJ's?
  • A friend of mine's pediatrician said three years, but I find that really hard to believe.  We used a crocheted blanket with big holes.  Gabrielle doesn't really move when she sleeps, so she's been using it for a while.

  • I say whenever you are personally comfortable. I think we started around 9mo when she outgrew her sleepsack and I didn't feel like investing in anymore. She barely moves at night and I have zero concerns. I use 2 blankets b/c her room is cold - a fleece "stroller" blanket folded in 1/2 and a cotton receiving blanket.

  • We've actually been doing it for a while. At first we used her muslin swaddling blankets. Since it's been colder I've been using a homemade light flannel blanket.

We just drape it over her, but she doesn't pull it over her face or anything.

  • We used one around 7-8 months. DD hated sleeping in her crib and we were worried that she would outgrow her swing (which was where she slept) so we got desperate. I'm usually one for following all the "rules," but we put a crocheted blanket in there and she's had one ever since. She still had her sleepsack at first since she didn't keep the blanket on her (still doesn't), but she did go to sleep better when we covered her with it (we tucked it around her waist).

  • I just started using a blanket about a month ago because I felt like he was getting cold at night.  Lucas is still in a sleep sack though.  Halo makes some big ones, he is 33 inches tall and fits just right in a size large.  He can stand up and even walk a little in his sleep sack.
  • We had to move ds to his crib as he's already outgrowing his swing and I wanted him to start to sleep in his own bed before he'd totally outgrown the swing.  He did better with a swaddle and lately with an arms out swaddle.  I use a muslin swaddling blanket so I figure its fairly breathable should he manage to pull it up by his face

  • We used a crocheted blanket starting last spring when he was 9 or 10 months. I used that all summer and then when the weather turned colder we moved to a fleece blanket. He loves it and won't sleep without it.

  • We still don't.  I am too afraid.  They move a ton when they sleep.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • The recommendation is not until at least 1 year old.  My LO has been sleeping in Halo Sleepsacks, and will continue to well past 1 year.  He'd just kick off a loose blanket and it wouldn't keep him warm, not to mention the safety risk.  Halo makes them in big sizes, even with foot holes for toddlers.

This exactly.  We just don't feel comfortable with it until after they're one.  Right now the plan is to try in the early fall when they're around 18 months old.

  • They have sleep sacks that are really big.  DS is almost 2 and still wears one.  I don't think I'll use a blanket until next year.  And even then he moves around a ton so I don't think it would keep him that warm anyways.

  • I'm with fallbride and Kim.  Both our kids move around so much when they sleep.  I don't think I'd be comfortable doing it right now.
