? for those who have had babies before

I just got a quote from my OBs office for all doctor visits (including one u/s, a non stress test and all postpartum care) and the doctors fees for delivery. After my insurance, my responsibility is about $1400. I know this doesn't include labs or hospital fees.

How much more should I be expecting???

  • i think we ended up paying about a couple thousand out of pocket the first time

  • We were responsible for paying our deductable.  Maybe you can call your insurance co.  they should be able to tell you a better amount than your ob office.

  • you're going to get a huge range, because each person's insurance policy is different. With DD, we didn't pay a dime for anything. My prenatal care and delivery were covered 100% because I worked at the hospital I gave birth at. Our plan changed the year after that, so even if I were on their coverage now, I'd have a 200$ copay for each of us.

On DH's plan, we're on deductible. Our OOP max is 5000 for family, but our deductible is 750/person. We'll probably hit that max, even though prenatal care is 100% covered.

  • Definately call your Insurance to find out what they cover. Every plan is different. I do know a lot of plans you have to pay a percentage of the total hospital bill. Someone did a question once about the average cost and for a Vaginal delivery short stay it started at like $14,000 and the goes up from there and really goes up if you have a C- Section. I think your best bet is to contact your insurance though and find out your coverage and what the patient responsibility is.

  • For our DD, I had typical vaginal birth w/no extra complications for baby or me...and our bill  was 7800...we had to pay $750 out of pocket.  I had an epidural and they billed separate.

  • With DD we paid $375 up front... by 20 weeks... and then the remainder after the birth. After insurance the hospital billed us $1,100.

I didn't realize it until I called the hospital wanting to set up a payment plan when they asked us how much we could pay on the spot. I told them maybe $700.. and the billing person said that if we could pay $750 that day, the hospital would write off the rest of the bill.

I had no idea that large hospital bills were even negotiable!

  • when i had ds, i was actually being covered under 2 insurance policies (mine and my dh's), so what the primary policy didn't cover, the secondary policy did cover. for the deductible i had a company "credit card" type thing that gave you $500/year for medical expenses. i got lucky and didn't have to pay anything at all.

this time around i'm, under dh's insurance only and will pay a total of $115 for my office visits, etc, and hospital stay. super awesome policy. if i go in network they cover 100% of costs after deductible.

also remember that you're going to have a separate hospital cost for your new baby

  • your first step would  be to  contact the  insurance  company and  find  out  what  deductibles and  co-pays  you  would  have. I  actually  did  that today  and  asked  for  worst  case  scenario. everyone's  plan is  different and  so  is  hospital  costs.  our insurance  was billed $29,000 for our  hospital stay  last  year. vaginal delivery with epidural. You will get alot of different price ranges on  hospital costs  depending bon  location. of  course  thats  not what they  paid - it was a  negotiated price. I  think  that's  why  another poster was able  to  negotiate a  cheaper  price  for  what  she  had  to pay. Insurance  companies  never pay  full price.  don't  forget any anesthesia (epidural) will bill you  seperately. So  will pediatrician and if  you  have  a  boy  and  have a  circumcision. The  ob  also  has  a  seperate  fee but ours was an all inclusive  fee.

  • with our insurance we only had to pay a co pay once and a co-pay every time we went to maternal fetal... so about $250.

DH insurance changed this time though; still waiting to get info from my dr's office on what i owe.
