WAHMs - Question for you

How did you transition into working and when?

LO is 5 weeks and I need to start working from home next week. DS likes to nap on me in the recliner for most of the day now, and I am trying to get him used to the sling or his bassinet for his naps. But I'm finding it hard to get much done during the mornings when he spaces his feedings every 2 hours apart. We take an hour to eat, change and get settled for a nap, which leaves me an hour if he doesn't fuss through his naps. Then I'm tired from pulling the night shift so DH can get to work and I feel like I can't keep my eyes open in the afternoon.

I'm nervous about getting on schedule. Does it get better? Do you have any suggestions on how to make it easier?

Re: WAHMs - Question for you

  • Eh, yeah...I have a nanny. I can't work and take care of DS at the same time. But I have an 8-5 desk job that requires me to be on the phone, computer, and "with it" all day.

  • I work from home mostly and have an almost 6 week old.  We are looking for someone to come to our house for childcare 8am-5pm.  I need to start working in 2 weeks but it is near impossible with a baby imo.  I had a friend that tried to do it and it seemed everytime I called her during the day her son was screaming, once he started getting more mobile (ie: crawling, walking) she said that she couldn't get anything done since he needed constant watching/attention. Naps only last so long.

  • I work from home and am returning to work next week. I have a job where I have to be available and on the phone all day. DD will not be here. She will be at the sitters until DH gets home and then he'll take care of her for the last 2-3 hours of my shift.

  • I work from home...very part-time but am finding it really hard to get anything done.  My DS is just now to where he is getting a little more routine... taking more regular naps (one long one - which is nice) but he is almost 10 weeks old and I still feel like I get nothing done most days - DH doesn't seem to understand!  I'd love to hear others ideas for getting on a better schedule too...

  • I work from home doing marketing stuff for my Dad's company, so he's been very flexible with me, but I do still have moments where I feel overwhelmed. I started working again when DS was about a week and a half, maybe 2 weeks old. As far as getting stuff done, I EBF and I've learned the places and arrangements in the house where I can be on my computer sending stuff out while he's eating, which helps. Its really a lot of 10, 15 or 20 min intervals. 10 min on the play mat for him means 10 min of working from the floor for me. I alternate between e-mailing out reading material and telling DS what a good job he's doing with tummy time. Or 20 min in the swing for him means 20 min of calls for me. I don't consider it ideal, but it is nice to get to be home with him and still earn a pay check. You get it down after a while and figure out what works for you and your child. DS loves being outside and luckily we live in San Diego where the weather has been great, so I move his swing and play mat out to the back yard and gets fresh air and play time while I work.

    Good luck!

  • Another option that no one has mentioned is that you either sleep in the evenings when your DH gets home, or you work in the evenings. You need sleep as much as he does - we tend to forget that. Good luck! It was tough but you figure out what works for you.

  • I don't work at home, but bring my DD to work with me. I work at a small embroidery shop, and luckily, I have an amazing boss. It is very exhausting taking care of her and working at the same time, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I feed her before work, at lunch, and at the end of the day. In between feedings, she hangs out in her moses basket and plays/naps, or in the Moby wrap. I highly recommend the Moby or similar type carrier. It has been a life saver on many occasions. If she's awake, I put her in the the lotus hold so she can watch mommy work, or if she is sleepy, she naps in the hug hold. All while my hands are left free to work.
