IVF Question (kinda stupid)

Disclaimer: This is only a random question. I am not considering it, just curious.

Okay, this is a really dumb question and I can't believe I'm even asking it, but here it goes. I understand that women have IVF for infertility (duh), but are there doctors out there that will do it for the people who are just wanting a multiple births? Like I said, dumb question, but heck some docs with do anything for a buck.

Re: IVF Question (kinda stupid)

  • I have NO facts about my reply, BUT I *think* that there are Doctors that would do anything for the right amount of $$

  • I can't believe there would be doctors doing that.  It's completely unethical.  Even for doctors specializing in IF, their goal is to get you pg with one baby at a time.

And I did do IVF and ended up with multiples.

What you describe would just be wrong.  And very "OctoMom".

  • I'm sure there are doctors out there who will do it- but I also know that the "good" clinics won't (SIRM, CCRM) the IVF clinic we went to specalized in SET (single embryo tranfers) and they are having great success with it. The doctors don't want a lot of high order multiples because it screws up their SART ratings. I'm not sure WHY anyone (besides octomom) would want to have multiples- there are so many complications and risks that the mom and the babies are put at, and that doesnt need to be the case.  Those of us who had to turn to IVF know  there is a risk my multiples- but you weight the risks and the rewards. Honestly, my sister has twins (from Clomid) I would not trade places with her- having one is hard work, I can't imagine two at the same age!

Our Journey from two to three! 3 IUI's, 2 IVF's, decided to move to foster/adopt. 12/24/2009 Baby C born, 2/1/2010 placed with us, 5/17/2011 Adoption final- we are finally a forever family! Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • You can find unethical doctors if you want to. In an IVF cycle, the ultimate goal is one healthy baby. Twin are an acceptable outcome, but beyond that, even if all the babies are born healthy, it is still, considered a failed cycle in the medical sense of things. Reputable reproductive endocrinologists (RE for short) want healthy, low risk pregnancies and healthy babies for their patients. There are times that high order multiples (HOM) occur, but those are, generally the exception. Many times, when you see HOM, they were conceived through IUI (intrauterine insemination), which is less exact. The Gosselin (sp) children were conceived through IUI. Situations like that are more of a judgement call on the part of the doctor. He may not be unethical, but, personally, he is more comfortable taking chances than I would be. HTH.

Exactly this. I got pregnant via IUI, and my RE (from a VERY reputable clinic) told us when we got started that if it looked as if I were going to release more than 3 eggs at during a cycle (they check via ultrasound before triggering ovulation), that they would cancel it so there would not be increased risks for me and or babies.

  • Honestly, I doubt there are doctors that would do it.  What I don't doubt is that there are doctors who dispense clomid (or other drugs that stimulate the ovaries) like candy and don't monitor their patients.  I am certain that there are women who exploit this and do end up with multiples, and who possibly even lie about IF and get clomid from a gyn.  It should also be noted that the vast percentage of high order multis (three or more) are due to ovarian stimulation and timed intercourse/insemination and not due to IVF.
