Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When did your LO drop their AM nap?

Our DD is 12mo and she fights her AM naps like crazy.  She seems exhausted but refuses to sleep.  She normally will sleep 1-1.5 hrs in the am and 1.5 hrs in the afternoon.  When she misses her AM nap she sleeps 2 hrs in the afternoon.  I've read that it's best to not allow your LO to drop their AM nap before 15mo but if she refuses sleep then she refuses sleep.  I don't know what to do.  When did your LO drop their AM nap and how long do they sleep in the afternoon?  Thanks!

  • She is in the transistion.  Some days she takes two naps and some days she takes one.  It is about 50/50 right now.  I am assuming soon she will be down to one.
  • We are still at 2 naps and at 14.5 mos old.  Not sure when he'll be dropping it because he really cant go more than 3 - 4 hours before needing a nap yet.
  • Wow -- 15 months sounds really late to me. Most kids I know drop it around a year. DD started really fighting it around 9 or 10 months, and I gave up on it entirely by her first birthday. Her afternoon nap definitely got longer.

  • Our DD dropped her afternoon nap @ 11 months.  She just kept refusing so we had no choice.  We ended up pushing the morning nap back a few minutes each day till now she goes down from 1 to 3, sometimes longer.  After dropping her nap she didn't sleep longer for the other nap at first, but eventually did.  People told me it was too early, but LO knew differently!  Some babies just don't need the exact "recommended" sleep.  Because believe me, we have always prided ourselves on her getting enough sleep, but you can't force them.  And she always woke up happy, so just go with the flow!  GL!
  • I know this is super early, but DD dropped her AM nap at 10 months. She now goes down at noon and sleeps around two hours. I couldn't force her to take two naps, so I just let it go. It's actually easier to get out of the house and do other things with her only taking one. She also sleeps very well at night (as long as she isn't cutting molars!).

  • DD1 was 11 months.

DD2 is in the process...started a little before she turned 15 months. Most days she takes one nap, occasionally still 2 (maybe once a week).

Both girls will take a 3-4 hour nap in the afternoon, once they were down to 1 nap. DD1 is almost 3 and I try to limit her to 2 hours.

  • DS started dropping his morning nap a couple weeks ago at 15.5 months, though he still occasionally takes that nap when he wakes up super early.

  • DD is 16 months and she just started taking 1 nap at daycare (just moved to the toddler room).  We still do 2 naps at home if she needs them, but will probably be moving to 1 nap so that she's on the same schedule at home and school.  Several other toddlers at our daycare are still taking 2 naps at home on the weekends.

  • Hmmm, so those of you who had your LOs drop their AM naps early, what time do they go to bed?  Our DD goes to bed between 7-7:30 but if she only gets one nap she can't make it that late.  She's normally in bed by 6:30/6:45 and asleep by 7.  I hate days like that because I feel so bad for her - she can hardly stay awake.

  • At 12 months I thought my son was ready. He was fighting his afternoon nap like crazy, then once he was done teething he was happy with two naps again (most days). Now at 14.5 months he is fighting morning nap some days and afternoon nap some days. On the days he fight his morning nap I just get him up and play until around noon and then put him back down for one mid day nap.
