Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Those with "little" fellas...25% or less...

We're about to start doing some sleep training, and I'm just curious if your little one still needs to eat once at night? I feel like when Rowan wakes up anytime after 4, I should feed him because I would think he's hungry after 8 hours. He's on the small side for his age, so I feel like maybe he can't stay full for the whole night...

It's really only the midnight and/or 2am wake ups that I want to stop. Did you sleep train and eliminate all feedings, or were you able to just get down to one? Isn't that confusing for babies, to make them cry it out/soothe them back to sleep if they're up at 2, but them give them the bottle if they're up at 4?

Just curious what others thought. TIA.

  • My dd is in the 6th percentile and is breastfed.  Because she is so little, I personally would never deny her food regardless of the time of day.  She usually wakes up twice to eat and I feed her.

Have you tried uping his daytime feedings?  I find that on the days I can get more milk into my DD during the daytime, the longer she sleeps at night.

  • I wonder the same thing.. We are sleep training, and for now I want to keep his 3:30 or later feed.. we dropped the 10:00 and 1:00 ones..  I think in another month or so we will drop the last one.. but for now I feel like he needs the extra milk..

  • While I'll agree there is some built-in intermittent reinforcement, I was able to eliminate all but one feeding.  I felt the same as you - my DD2 is in the 30th % or so and I didn't want to take away night feedings altogether.

How did that work out with the sleep training? Was it easy? Did he drop the two feedings quickly, or did it take a long time? Did you just decide you weren't going to go to him unless he woke after a certain time??

  • My peanut is in the 1-2%, and I fed him every time he woke up. Half because I didn't want to CIO with two, and half because I'll take every opportunity to stuff him full of food.

My pedi told me once they reached 11-13lbs they "could" sttn.  It took him to almost 13lbs, but he eventually did it on his own.  He'll rarely wake up now, and I still feed him right away.  I figure he must be hungry.

  • I'm interested in the responses, too.  Our LO is 25% and at our 6-month well-baby exam this monring, the doc believes that we should continue to wake to feed him.

BUT the doc also cautioned against setting ourselves up for a habit or bad pattern.  So he asked that I start paying attention to LO's cries at night to see if I can discern whether he's hungry or just bored and awake.  He mentioned that we could let LO fuss for a few minutes first.

  • We were able to move his 2 am feeding to a 10:30 dreamfeeding.  Every now and then he will wake up and be inconsolable.  If that happens we feed him and he goes right back to sleep.  I figure he just has days where he is hungrier than other days.
  • My DD was in the 6th percentile at her 6 month check up (she was technically 6.5 months at the appt), but she had started STTN about 2 weeks prior.  She was 13 lbs, 8 oz.  Our pedi told us that around 12 lbs is the magic number and that they should be able to go at least an 8 hour stretch overnight, up to 12 without eating.
  • DS has actually moved up from 15th to 25th percentile since I stopped feeding him in the middle of the night (and started solids).  He now goes 11-12 hours without a feeding almost every night.

  • I was worried about how to determine if he really needed it or not.  For about a week(a month ago) he was only eating for about 5 min. at the first of two feedings.  I started ignoring this feeding for 5-10 min.  After a day or two he dropped that one.  Now he'll wake up once (between 3-4) and he'll eat for 15 min. so I know he really needs it, not just to soothe.  He sttn for one whole week, now he's eating everything all day and wakes up again once.  I'm hoping it's a growth spurt.  GL
