Post-partum weight loss (moms of outside babies come in)

Hi ladies! Congratulations on your babies. I have been so happy to see that all the babies are doing well.

I wanted to ask if you could share where you are currently with your post-partum weight loss. What did you experience immediately after coming home from the hospital with your weight? I'm just curious as mom of an inside baby...wanted to see REAL accounts of what you are actually going through to get an idea of what to expect. I have had two friends recenty give birth (in January) and both are down 25ish pounds within about 3 weeks, which I think is awesome, but wasn't sure if that's something that is typical or not.

Just interested in your input!! : )

Re: Post-partum weight loss (moms of outside babies come in)

  • I didn't notice anything being different (other than not having a bump!) until nearly 2 weeks later. I was still swollen and my clothes were still snug. Once I hit the 2 week mark, I woke up one morning and the swelling was gone and my shirts were big and it was comfy to wear my own undies again. At my incision check a couple days later, I was down 40 lbs (all my pg weight and 15 lbs less than pre pg).

Most of it was water retention from pre-e, but I've been told a couple times that I look "skinny" :) I don't know if skinny is the word I'd use, but I feel really good even though my stomach is still so squishy.

  • I'm a week post partum and I really do need to get on the scale. My scale at home is broke :( I gained abt 35 lbs total. With my DS I gained almost 50 lbs and a week pp I was down 23 lbs. I am using a pp belly wrap and that definitely has helped with my swelling. I'm VERY anxious to get back on track but after a section I do wanna be safe and weight at least 4 weeks before I get back into the swing of working out. Plan to start walking this week.

I have heard that the swelling can linger a little bit (usually a couple weeks) but I am glad to hear it does eventually go away!! Something to look forward to...I am ready to wear my wedding rings and my normal shoes again : ) VERY excited to hear that you are down 40 pounds, I think that's pretty much awesome!

So you would recommend the belly wrap then? I have a belly bandit and am hoping it works to help keep the support for my back and stomach and to help the uterus shrink back down. I have gained right at 40 pounds (actually lost weight at my last appt) and am really wondering what will happen once LO is out!

  • My baby is still comfy on the inside but I wanted to mention that I bought a Belly Bandit as well and I am really hoping that it works!

I would imagine that every woman is different.  Every woman seems to be different in what she gains in pregnancy so loss will be very different.  If you became pregnant when you were a healthy eater/excercised often etc. I imagine you will lose the lbs quicker than someone who started pregnancy overweight and unhealthy.

  • I had my little one @ 31 wks, tomarrow being nine wks ago.  I had gained a total of 23 pounds and by the time I had to go for my follow up after having the baby, I had lost 18 pounds.  I, too, have been told that I look really good considering I just had my baby, but I dont feel like it.  I was swollan for about 2.5 wks and my stomach was/is all outta shape.  I do have to say it has gone down alot, but its just not as flat as it used to be.

With my first, I lost 20 pounds the first week she was born, but the rest just hung around for a good 6 years.  I gained 85 pounds and only went 30 wks with her.

  • LO is 11 days old today and I am down to my pre-pregnancy weight today. I only lost 5 pounds before leaving the hospital, but after the first week the swelling went down and the weight fell off. I will say that I am EBF which I feel like helps burn calories. Also while I am back to pre-preg weight my stomach is not the same as pre-preg, still squishy and has a major muffin top on my pre-preg pants. It is nice to know its going away fairly quick!

  • The Dr. actually ordered me a medical grade compression wrap! On my 2nd day in the hospital the nurse brought it in and said hey Dr. ordered u this and wants you to wear it. It looks EXACTLY like the belly bandit. I wore it starting the day after I had DD (c-section), until abt 5 days post partum. After I got home I decided to try the one I had bought. This is the one I have:

https://www.amazon.com/Peanut-Shell-Post-Pregnancy-Compression-Postpartum/dp/B002S52XHI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1295796339&sr=8-3The one the Dr. ordered was abt to be too big, and this looks a lot better under clothes. All and all, especially compared to my first PG, I think the belly wrap is totally worth it! My "pouch" so to speak is almost gone and although I'm thicker from the weight gain my belly is almost flat again. :)

  • Sorry let me add too, that I think the wrap has TOTALLY helped my recovery. For a while I couldn't lay on my side, my insides just ached. But both the wrap and the girdle really hold everything in place and has made my recovery way easier and less painful. Girdle is just a little bit more comfortable :)

  • I came home weighing 9 lbs less.

its been a week and I'm down 15.

    I gained 29 total, so we'll see...

  • I'm happy to say that on the day I was admitted to the hospital I weighed 178lbs.  I went to my doctor's office for my first follow up visit exactly 1 week afterwards and was down to 168lbs.  Then I went again for another check on my incision 3 days later and was down to 160lbs.

I haven't gotten on the scale since then (I'm now 2 weeks and 3 days postpartum) partially because I think our scale at home isn't very reliable. But I've been pretty happy with the weight loss. Only problem is that with the c-section my ab muscles are completely shot.  I can't wait to be able to get back into the gym.

  • It's been less than 5 days but I haven't done anything yet. Actually I have been eating MORE than when I was pregnant!  I guess my plan with weight loss is to just breastfeed and wait at least a month before I put in any effort.  I'm still too exhausted and in too much pain to think about trying anything else.

  • I gained about 25 lbs with this pregnancy, and at the 2 week pp mark, I had already lost 20. Today LO is 3 weeks, and I plan to weigh soon.. I'm curious to see if that last 5 lbs has fallen off. :) Thank you, BFing!!

  • Well I am almost two weeks out and I have lost 18 pounds. I did not gain anything while pg, I was overweight to begin with so they did not want me to gain.

That being said with my other three I lost for the first week and then gained the whole time I BF. I have meet many women who do not lose until they wean so do not be to hard on yourself if you are one of those. It is really hard to watch everyone else lose and lose while I was struggling.

Over the years I have also watched my friends with boys struggle more with weight issues more then the ones that delivered girls.

Remember it takes 9 months to change your body give yourself at least 9 months to get it back.

  • Thanks ladies for the input. I'm not really in a mindset of needing or wanting to lose weight right away, but I was just curious as to how everyone else was reacting. I do have to be in a wedding when I am about 8 weeks PP so I am hoping to be back down close to what I weighed before - even within 20 pounds of my normal weight I'd be happy! I guess we will see what happens - I am not EXPECTING anything!

  • I gained 37 ibs, which to me is funny since I didn't put on any weight until the last trimester, and about 20 of that was in the last few weeks. I put on SO much water weight.

But luckily I have lost all of it pretty much save for the past 2 ibs or so now. I hope to be able to start exercising after my 6 week check up to loose even more.

  • My stomach really deflated after giving birth.  They say you look more like 6 months pregnant, but I'm less than that for sure.  Not complaining either.  In terms of losing weight, I'm not worried about it.  No time for that right now!

  • I gained 25lbs and lost 10 by the time I came home from the hospital (DS weight 7lb 6 oz). I lost 5 more in the first week and I've been there ever since.

I'm now 16 days PP and 10lb up from my pre-pregnancy weight. I'm wasn't able to breastfeed so I don't know if that makes a difference.

  • I gained 30 lbs during the pregnancy, and I lost 45 in 2 weeks... I was amazingly swollen, so this was all water weight I am sure.

Its freakish. The calluses on my heels look like raisins.

I will say, however, that my tummy is still puffy. The weight may be gone, but my shape is different.

  • I'm 1 week 3 days pp and I'm down to 115 from 138 so about 23 pounds so far. I'm normally about 102 not pregnant. I contribute most of the weight loss to having a baby over 8lbs and breastfeeding. I also have a very high metabolism so that could be it too.
