LO constipation (long)

Our LO is 11 days old, and the last few days we've been dealing with constipation.  The first three days, she was breastfed...it just wasn't working out (had a difficult time latching on), so we switched to Enfamil (regular).  She was spitting up quite a bit and seemed a little gassy.  On Monday, we had our first doctor appointment, which is when he switched her over to soy formula (because of the spitting up, gassy and DH is slightly lactose intolerant-pretty mild case).  Ever since she's been taking soy formula, she only has a BM every two-three days.  Her first BM since being on soy, was firm/formed and screamed bloody murder while passing it.  When this happened, I called the doctor and they suggested giving her water w/dark Karo syrup for Friday & Saturday.  She had her second BM (since being on soy, and first since her water/syrup stuff) this morning around 6am...as she kept going, it would get softer, but still started out firm/formed and still screamed bloody murder.  It is just so heartbreaking to see her in that kind of pain.

We decided to try Similac sensitive this morning and are going to continue to try that instead of the soy.  This way, hopefully we'll avoid the constipation that goes along with soy, and we'll still be keeping in mind the fact that with DH being lactose intolerant-maybe there's a bit of that in her too.  I keep reading that switching formulas and/or soy can bring on constipation.  Is anyone else seeing this?  I know I've heard formula fed babies don't have a BM as often as breastfed...so I guess my main goal at this point, is getting her to the point where she can have a BM and not scream!

Any suggestions?  We're going to try to see how sensitive works...I hate switching like this, but I definitely don't want her on soy, if this is what it's going to do to her!

Thanks so much for your help :)

Re: LO constipation (long)

  • You can give a little prune juice.  Also do a lot of bicycle motions with her legs during the day- it can help.

  • My DD is occasionally constipated ( on Similac Sensitive - EFF ). I mix up 2 tsp molasses in 3 oz water and give her 1 oz i n between feedings as needed, as recommended by our pediatrician works like a charm. I also do the bicycle legs as pp recommended and if she looks uncomfortable when shes going I'll hold her chest to chest with me and put her legs up to her belly that seems to help too or massage her belly. I've also been told to try a warm water bottle with a towel between it and her belly but I havent tried that. Good luck, I know how you feel. It breaks my heart when LO is that miserable. I would also call your pediatrician and let them know whats going on, mine told me to call back if it was persistent and she was in pain. Also, give her some time to adjust to the new formula- I wouldnt keep switching.

  • DS suffered horribly.  What our pedi suggested was probiotics.  We got a bottle of infant jarrodophilus (think activia for babies) at a health food store and stirred it into his bottle once a week.  It took about a week to start working.  In the meantime DS was miserable.  But we've continued to use it and there hasn't been a problem since.
  • We supplement with formula, but also use the soy.  He has only been constipated from it once, but an ounce of prune juice mixed with an ounce of water took care of it within the hour.  I felt so bad for him!  We also put a little vaseline on his bum because it was so raw from passing the hard, dry bowel movement.

  • A new formula takes a couple of weeks to see improvement. Switching after a few days will just mess up her system even more. You may be able to give her diluted prune juice but I would call your pedi first.

  • We had a few issues going from Similac advance to Similac Sensitive and our doc suggested doing the Kyro syrup twice a day to keep the stools soft. We would do one in the morning and then one at the night time feeding. It took a few days to kick in, but it works really well now. Even now, she has a BM about every other day. Very rarely will it be every day. sometimes she will sneek one in though. Our doctor also suggested juices also, either pear juice or apple juice. You can find them in the baby section. Do like 2 oz of juice and 2 oz of water. Do this in between feedings.. I tended not to like to do this, though, cause our DD was real gassy also, and this just made the gas work. But maybe keep up with the Kyro syrup and this will get your LOs tummy straightened out. Good luck.
