Upper back pain?

I don't know if this is pregnancy related or not so I thought I'd see if anyone else is experiencing the same thing or has experienced it before.  I'm having some pretty bad upper back pain, in my shoulder blade region.  It's more of an aching pain than anything else.  And the aching runs down my arms to my hands.  It's also sort of difficult to take a deep breath because it hurts my back.  Tylenol makes it a little better but it just comes back within a few hours.  I'm sitting here with a heating pad on my back now...not sure what else to do.

Re: Upper back pain?

  • Yes, I had this with my first pregnancy.  If it wasn't my lower back, it was my upper back.  I just attributed it to carrying the weight.  I took a lot of baths.  Sitting at my desk at work I think is what caused a lot of the pain.

  • I've been having similar pain. It feels muscular so I am not worried but you can also have referred pain in the shoulder so if it gets bad I would check in with your OB/MW. For now, mine is more achy than anything. Tylenol is a big loser for pregnancy back pain (lessons from my first pregnancy) but Biofeeeze and a heating pad help.
  • I had it from the beginning under my right shoulder blade but it wraps around to my front and I have pain ribcage area in front too.  OB diagnosed gall bladder issues and sent me for an abdominal ultrasound, it is just inflamed and I don't have stones but this is a pretty common issue in pregnancy.

This doesn't sound like your issue but it is worth checking on b/c I thought I had pulled something in my back and it wasn't until someone on my month board mentioned GB that I was even aware it could be a problem.

  • As my boobs have been getting bigger I've been finding myself slouching way more at work and I've been getting bad pains in my upper back in between my shoulder blades as well.
  • Thanks, ladies!  I've been wondering if it was my growing boobs or from sitting at work.  It seems to be worse after I've been on the computer a lot.  I also read online that since everything is being compressed in there, everything could be pushing up on my ribs.  I feel better today but it comes and goes.
