Can anyone answer a tax ?

I want to try doing our taxes online this year.... I have all of DH's W-2's. Do I file for two states? Or do I file for the state on file? We haven't officially changed addresses with either of his jobs because of not being sure he'd graduate.

Re: Can anyone answer a tax ?

  • You have to file taxes in each state you live in/ earn money while you reside in.  You can often file partial residency returns.  Check your state websites.

  • if you use Turbotax, they ask you about your residency and will walk you through filing your federal and each state. You want to file for each state you made $ in and/or lived in. Depending on how long you lived in the state (and probably how the different states handle things) you will probably just have to pay taxes for a portion of the year. It's really easy though.

  • You should definitely do TurboTax.  It's super easy and will tell you exactly what to do.

  • It looks like as I was filling everything in it took care of it for me. So, I don't need to fret like I was before I started. They're actually almost done. I have one more W2 to enter and then just e-file. :-)

I hate doing this because I worry about how confusing it can be. That and they never send me my dollar! LOL.

  • Actually, is he full time AD right now? That can change a lot... We have lived in CA for 4 years but DH has never paid state income tax in his life because he is still a TX resident, and I'm pretty sure its federal law (it could be a mil. guideline that is up to states to adopt, but that doesn't seem right) that unless you buy a house at a station you remain a resident of the state you were when you enlisted.
