How much and how long to lose..help!

Hi girls, I was wondering how much everyone gained during pregnancy and more importantly, how long is it taking to lose the weight? I am almost a month pp and havent been cleared to exercise by my dr yet, but I am finding it really hard to lose weight without exercise. I gained 60 lbs and lost 25 lbs withing the first 2 1/2 weeks being home, but that rapid weight loss has stopp and i havent lost a thing since. Anyone else in the same boat? NONE of my pp clothes fit and I feel like I dont know what to do. Has anyone started excecising before 6 week checkup? I had a c section and dont want to wait 8 weeks to exercise.

  • I had a c-section also, and my best advice is to wait the total amount of time your doctor suggested. Your body needs that time to heal and if you jump the gun too quickly you could be doing more harm than good. Concentrate on getting the rest you need.

I gained 50lbs. during pregnancy and because I EBF the weight fell off, plus more. Here I am 6 months PP and while my pre-pregnancy clothes fit they do not look the way they use to.  I started the 30 Day Shred today and feel excellent. Give yourself time, and continue to eat right. The exercise will come. GL to you.

  • I had 2 c-sections and I totally agree with the pp...please wait until you are cleared.  My girlfriend jumped the gun and started to workout earlier than recommended and ended up having to get some reconstructive work done and then was on bedrest!  I know it can be totally frustrating.  I remember seeing the pounds climb up and up while waiting but once your body is fully healed, you can then go full throttle and kick your own butt.
  • I gained 60lbs during my pregnancy, and had a bout of PPD/total denial of how I looked for approx. 6 months post pregnancy.

When DS was 6mo I decided the journey, I have not joined any diets (Weight Watchers, etc.), it has been 100% on my own.  It has taken a good 13months to take it off.  I was in maternity pants for a while because I refused to keep buying clothes as I went down sizes.  Approx. 2 sizes extra.

Please do not start before your doctor advises you to start exercising.  But, you can eat clean while you wait.  When you get the approval, there are excellent exercise groups that focus on new moms trying to gain back their figures.

I still want to lose a lot more since I was a size 12 when I got pregnant, I have set mini goals since I have a long way to go too.

I also have learned a lot about my body!  I think age also has to do with how fast you can shed pounds. My metabolism has slowed a lot since I was younger.  I used to be able to sneeze and I lost 10lbs... I'm 30.

  • Are you breastfeeding?

It varies among women, but if you're breastfeeding, I didn't see noticeable weight loss until like 2-3 months postpartum. If you're able to BF until LO is 5-6 months, that typically is the time of most weight loss, since they're getting ALL  their calories from you, and they require more.

But again, try to be patient, and don't push yourself too hard. I personally am a fan of the South Beach Diet if you're not bfing-- if you are, I think you have to start with phase 2. But the SBD is super effective. I'm back on it now because my pants are getting too tight and i'm too cheap to shop the next size up!

  • I think it is harder with a c-section.  I did not have one and was able to start exercising again at 2 weeks pp (I  didn't get my doctor's okay, just felt like I could and did it) and lost the 45 I gained in about 10-12 weeks.  I know it is tough, once you can work out again, I bet it will melt right off.  I actually think the BFing did more for me than even the working out did!

Totally unrelated, but your LO is SO STINKIN' CUTE... love that pic!

  • It's mostly listening to your doctors, but it's also listening to your own body.  I've run my whole life and continued to do so throughout my entire pregnancy.  I gained 34lbs with twins and lost 26 if it in the first two weeks.  It was all off by 10 weeks, and I'd say I looked like my "normal" self at 12 weeks.

My doc gave me the same 6 week c/s rule, but she also told me she trusted me to not do anything crazy.  I know my body, I know how hard to push, and I know I needed to run for sanity that first month.  Started walk/running at two weeks and running full time at four.  (And I didn't really care if my guts fell out since I'm done having kids. Big Smile)

The best thing to do is start with walking.  Slow walking.  Short walking.  See how your body reacts.  If you're sore and bleeding and exhausted, you're probably not ready to do more.  Good luck and enjoy these first few months with your LO.  Time flies, trust me!

  • I gained 63lbs with my last pregnancy and then went through a divorce and ended up 8lbs heavier than I was at 9mths pregnant, I was going backwards! It has taken me 11mths, but I am now 10lbs less than I was when I got pregnant and still have another 25-35lbs to go.

For me, I lost the first 70lbs through diet alone. Losing weight is 80% diet, 10% weight training and 10% cardio. Right now you should just focus on your diet and wait the full amount of time for your body to heal
